Jamie Fraser’s long-lost son, William Ransom, debuted in the second episode of Outlander Season 7 and instantly turned heads. Seasoned franchise fans remembered how Jamie was practically blackmailed to share an intimate night with Geneva Dunsany, back when he was working on the Helwater estate. William Ransom was the shocking result of that reluctant night, who was brought up by Lord John Grey after Geneva's death.

While William remained a silent secret between Jamie and John in Outlander, he finally learned the truth about his parentage in the penultimate season, setting the stage for an emotional confrontation in the final season.

While William Ransom's journey from an English nobleman to a man grappling with the truth of his identity charmed the viewers on-screen, fans have been equally intrigued by the talented actor behind the role. Canadian actor Charles Vandervaart brings Jamie's illegitimate son to life on-screen, who has appeared in many TV shows and films, namely The Stanley Dynamic and Lost in Space.

More on this in our story.

Meet Charles Vandervaart: The actor who plays Jamie's illegitimate son in Outlander

Charles Vandervaart, the Canadian actor who might have joined Outlander as William Ransom in its penultimate season, quickly gained attention. As Jamie's illegitimate son, William Ransom is one of the main characters in Gabaldon's latter books and the Starz series did an impressive job in bringing his complicated arc to life.

Charles Vandervaart is best known for playing the titular twin brother Larry Stanley in the 2014 sitcom The Stanley Dynamic, along with his on-screen brother Taylor Abrahamse, who played the other lead and twin brother Luke Stanley. The Outlander star bagged three nominations at the Young Entertainer Awards for Best Leading Young Actor- Television Series in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Before his breakthrough role, Charles Vandervaart had guest appearances in popular small-screen shows, namely Bomb Girls, The L.A. Complex, The CW's period drama series Reign and Tim Kilby's police procedural Private Eyes.

The actor's lead role in The Stanley Dynamic opened the gate to many opportunities for him and he appeared in many projects like Damian Kindler's 2020 monster horror series October Faction, Netflix's 2021 sci-fi space series Lost in Space, the period drama series Murdoch Mysteries and the 2022 podcast series Oracle 2: The Dreamland Murders.

Additionally, the star also played the main character of Robbie Hobbie in Hulu's teen comedy series Holly Hobbie from 2018 to 2022. The actor has also voiced various characters in the popular animated animal adventures series PAW Patrol.

William Ransom learned the truth about his parentage in Season 7

William Ransom was at the center of action in Outlander Season 7 Part 2 after he overhears a conversation between Jamie and Lord Grey, who were discussing the truth about his real parentage. William grew up thinking that he was Geneva and Ludovic Ransom's son, who was nurtured by Geneva's sister Isobel and her husband, Lord John Grey, after his mother's death. However, Season 7 finally featured a pivotal moment, where William learned that Jamie is actually his biological father.

While the truth was hard for William, and he was naturally cross at Jamie for concealing this truth from him, Lord John Grey's betrayal felt the worst. Since John had assumed a surrogate father title in his life, William could not believe this betrayal on his part.

Another interesting and shocking sequence featured in Outlander Season 7 was the complicated relationship between William and a prostitute named Jane Pocock he met in the latest season. While William's relationship with Jane ends tragically, with Jane dying by su*c*de after being accused of murder, it gave rise to a jaw-dropping mystery for Outlander Season 8.

The final moments of the Outlander Season 7 finale revealed a shocking possibility: Claire and Jamie's deceased daughter, Faith, might have survived and mothered Jane and her sister. While William is yet to learn this shocking truth, it will surely bring more chaos and uncertainty to his relationship with Jamie.

Tune in to the Outlander Season 8 premiere on Starz on March 6.
