Significance of Lauren’s story in Brilliant Minds
When Lauren first appears in the second season of Brilliant Minds, we see that she is suffering from delusions. In her delusions, she sees that she is being filmed continuously. This takes a toll on her mind and body, as her situation deteriorates continuously.
Initially, Oliver Wolf points out that the delusions that Lauren is facing are because of The Truman Show Syndrome. However, when her situation is diagnosed even further, truths are revealed. The reason Lauren is facing delusions is because of the stressful situation that she is going through in her life. She recently went through a breakup, along with it, she is also going through an IVF treatment. The stress from not being able to afford this expensive IFV treatment led her to take on more shifts at work than she could manage.
All these led her to get the delusions, which are eventually fixed by none other than Wolf. Now, in the interview, Molly Bernard speaks about the pressure women feel from society to have babies. Molly Bernard points out that many times society shames women by indicating that a woman is “a failure if you can’t have the baby”, hence, it eventually leads to immense pressure on women. This happened to Lauren as well. All this pressure turned Lauren’s situation into a “disaster”.
Molly Bernard also points out that the way Lauren’s truth is revealed is “brilliant and heartbreaking”. It could be understood that Lauren desired to be loved and have a family of her own.
This was the reason that pushed her to choose the path of IVF. Despite her breakup, she did not want to “give up on her IVF journey”, which eventually led her to her delusions. Molly Bernard adds that just like Lauren, many other women go through a similar situation. There is a relatability factor that makes Lauren’s story so significant. Many people can “relate to going to massive extremes to make a family.”
Brillian Minds truly struck gold with Molly Bernard’s depiction of Lauren. She truly brought a distinct level of authenticity. It resonated deeply and left an impact. While speaking about how she prepared for the role of Lauren in Brilliant Minds, she speaks about how her wife’s profession helped her depict Lauren’s character properly.

Her wife is a public defender who also often deals with patients suffering delusions. Hence, Molly Bernard was able to handle Lauren’s character with a distinct level of “compassion and empathy”. She also viewed Lauren’s delusions with a “lot of respect”.
She also speaks about how difficult filming the hospital scenes was. She felt “clinical and sterile and uncomfortable and wrong”, which enhanced Lauren’s depiction even further. She truly embodied Lauren’s character and sent a message that would always be remembered by every Brilliant Minds fan.
