The second season of Wednesday has ended, leaving viewers with many unanswered questions. The narrative of the series expands significantly with the introduction of Aunt Ophelia in the picture. In the finale, Wednesday sets out with Uncle Fester and opens Aunt Ophelia’s book, a gift from her mother. Upon opening the book, she realizes her ability to see visions has returned, revealing something dark and ominous.
In her vision, she sees that her Aunt Ophelia is still alive. Immediately after, the scene shifts to Grandmama Hester Frump’s mansion, where she enters a hidden tunnel and reunites with her long-lost daughter, Ophelia. Yes! Ophelia is living and breathing and definitely has some sinister desires regarding her niece.
Aunt Ophelia wants her niece dead. On the wall in front of Ophelia, we see she has written in red, “Wednesday MUST DIE”. This brings us to the question of why she wants to kill her. Fans are already diving into theories, and many have indicated that their Raven connections might have something to do with it.
Aunt Ophelia and the Raven theory bring a looming threat on Wednesday
It is denoted by Wednesday’s mother, Morticia, that her sister Ophelia was taken to Willow Hill after her visions led her to shed black tears. She tried her best to prevent her mother from taking Ophelia to Willow Hill; however, she could not stop her eventually. In the new season, we also come to know that Ophelia and Wednesday share the same psychic ability and are both Ravens. These ability allows them to see visions from the past, present, and future.
Ophelia’s story is truly tragic. She pushed her abilities too far, which led her descent into madness. Morticia feared Wednesday would also face the same consequence. In the climax scene of the second season, we see that Ophelia is neither missing nor dead but rather very much alive and has some dangerous plans for her niece. The reason that she might want to kill Wednesday might be related to her psychic abilities.
As we know, Ravens have the ability to get visions. Hence, there is a possibility that Ophelia also saw a vision which led her to believe that her niece must be dead in order to prevent some dangerous, future catastrophic event. It could be seen as her desperate attempt to change a grim destiny she foresees. As we see that Wednesday also tries her best to save Enid because of her visions. Many viewers have also pointed out that there might be certain connections with Grandmama Hester in this.
She might be playing a key role in this whole thing. She has also shown her willingness to sacrifice a family member for her benefit. Hence, it is quite plausible that she has been manipulating Ophelia, feeding her visions, taking them to a dark turn. We see that she tries to get closer to her granddaughter in the second season and even wants her to stay at her mansion, even though she has hidden Ophelia, who wants to kill her.
This definitely indicated a certain connection between the whole thing. She had the chance to reveal Ophelia’s truth to her family. Yet she hid her for years despite seeing Morticia’s sadness at losing her sister.
Although many theories attempt to explain Ophelia’s desire to kill her niece, the real truth will only be revealed in the next season. The ending definitely adds to the intrigue of the twisted family drama of the Addams family.
