Hwang Dong-hyuk directed Squid Game, a South Korean thriller series, for Netflix. The unique plot follows 456 individuals enduring financial trouble who are encouraged to play in lethal versions of childhood activities for a grand reward of ₩45.6 billion. The show delves into issues of poverty, class injustice, and human despair.

It debuted in 2021 to global acclaim and quickly became Netflix's most-watched show. Season 2 debuted in December 2024, with the third and final season arriving in June 2025. The first season was warmly lauded, while Season 3 garnered mixed reviews.

In Squid Game Season 3, Pink Guard 011 has a change of heart as a result of her traumatic history and a brief glimmer of optimism brought on by Gi-hun's sacrifice.

In a Netflix interview, Hwang said:

"She’s someone whose inner light has all but faded, drifting deeper into the night. A flicker of hope and pull towards life reignites within No-eul. I wanted to show her rising again, reclaiming her will to live, and giving life another shot."

One of the most emotional and surprising twists in Squid Game Season 3 was the transformation of Pink Guard 011, also known as Kang No-eul. Played by Park Gyu-young, No-eul starts off as a dedicated enforcer within the Games, strictly following orders.

However, by the season finale, she breaks all the rules—faking identities, killing a superior, helping Player 246 escape, and eventually walking away from the Game. This dramatic shift raised an important question that why did Pink Guard 011 suddenly change.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, clarified in a Netflix interview that No-eul's metamorphosis was the consequence of ongoing emotional difficulties rather than an abrupt change.

No-eul's sensitivity and newfound sense of purpose motivated her to assist Player 246—Gyeong-seok, an artist and father attempting to rescue his sick daughter. She saw an opportunity to give someone else hope and healing by saving him, something she had hoped for herself. In addition, she demolished the records room, signifying a last reprieve from the harsh Game system.

The turning point came during the final Sky Squid Game, when she witnessed Seong Gi-hun’s powerful act of self-sacrifice to save a baby. The program gives No-eul a little moment of serenity, but it doesn't give a clear answer as to whether she finds her daughter. She puts life and healing ahead of power and survival. This conclusion, according to Hwang, was her "rising again," regaining her will to live and reconciling with her past.

Squid Game's character No-eul delves into deeper themes of grief, atonement, and human perseverance. Her experience serves as a reminder that even individuals who have been brought to the brink of despair may regain hope.
