Ever since Starz series' Outlander introduced Roger MacKenzie in Season 2 as the charming guitar-strumming historian, fans have been trying to place where they’ve seen his face before. There’s something instantly familiar about the actor's screen presence, which is a mix of warmth, intensity and quiet charisma that makes him stand out, even in a show packed with memorable characters.

Roger MacKenzie is an important character from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books, who is Rev. Wakefield's adopted son, who eventually time-travels to the past and marries Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie's (Sam Heughan) daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton). Ever since Roger's introduction in the magical universe, the Starz series has featured interesting storylines revolving around the character and his relationship with Jamie, Claire and Brianna.

If Roger MacKenzie seems strangely familiar every time he appears on screen, it’s because he’s played by Richard Rankin, the acclaimed Scottish actor whose career spans gritty crime dramas, sharp-edged thrillers and widely praised miniseries.

More on Richard Rankin's portrayal of Roger in the Starz series in our story.

Scottish actor Richard Rankin plays Roger MacKenzie in Outlander

Scottish actor Richard Rankin made his debut as Roger MacKenzie in the thirteenth episode of Outlander Season 2 titled Dragonfly in Amber. After starting his career with Scottish series like The Old Guys and The Crimson Field on BBC, Rankin starred as Sean McGary/McAdams in BBC One's British drama series The Syndicate in 2015.

This role paved the way for his starring roles as Norrie Duncan in the 2015 psychological crime drama From Darkness and as D.I. Elliott Carne in the 2016 drama miniseries Thirteen, before his breakout role of Roger in Outlander Season 2.

Since starring in the critically-acclaimed Starz drama, Richard Rankin has appeared as Ian Rooney in the 2017 BBC miniseries The Replacement and as Father Hrothweard in the historical drama series The Last Kingdom. Recently, Rankin debuted in the starring and titular role of DS John Rebus in the 2024 Scottish crime drama Rebus, adapted from the Inspector Rebus novels by Sir Ian Rankin.

Additionally, the actor has also appeared in John Wells' 2015 comedy-drama film Burnt, alongside an ensemble cast of Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Omar Sy, Uma Thurman and Emma Thompson.

Roger MacKenzie is an important character from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books

While Jamie and Claire's passionate chemistry and adorable love won over fans in Outlander, Gabaldon's readers were waiting for Brianna and Roger's debut, another beloved couple from the author's magical universe. Fans first met Roger when he was still a Wakefield, Rev. Wakefield's adopted son, who developed a keen interest in history and eventually secured a professor's position at Oxford. However, Roger gives up his comfortable and promising life in the 20th century once he learns about Claire Randall's magical time-traveling abilities and develops a romance with her daughter, Brianna.

After Brianna leaves on her own time-traveling adventure to warn her parents about their approaching deaths in Outlander, Roger follows suit. After their fair share of hardships, Brianna and Roger get married and decide to stay in the past with Jamie and Claire.

However, after their daughter Mandy's health posed a problem in Season 6, they returned to their own time and decided to settle there instead. The penultimate season saw a heartfelt reunion between Roger and his father when the former accidentally time-traveled to a different time period.

After a harrowing season that tested the couple's love and loyalties, both Brianna and Roger were reunited in the seventh season. It was also hinted that the couple will likely travel to the 18th century and settle with Jamie and Claire in Fraser's Ridge, setting an exciting conclusion in Outlander Season 8.

Tune in to the final season premiere on Starz on March 6.
