CBS premiered its latest police drama, Boston Blue, on October 17, 2025. The Reagan family was introduced to the new city and the new time slot.
The much-awaited premiere not only revealed a new crime terrain set in Boston but also quickly drew focus to the recasting of Sean Reagan, a character adored by Blue Bloods fans.
After several weeks of speculation, CBS announced that Mika Amonsen would take on the role of Sean Reagan, which was previously played by Andrew Terraciano for 14 seasons and close to 300 episodes on Blue Bloods.
The narrative now centers on Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) as he moves to the Boston police department to keep an eye on Sean, who starts as a patrol officer. Questions are being raised by the audience and the critics about the reasons for this casting change, new creative decisions, and the implied different family dynamic.
And now showrunner Brandon Margolis has shed light on this decision in an interview with Variety. He said that the writers were looking for a way to change the interaction between the characters since Danny was no longer only a detective but also the father of a cop.
Why was Sean Recast in Boston Blue? Showrunner Brandon Margolis explains

Speaking with Variety, showrunner Brandon Margolis explained:
“We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on ‘Blue Bloods.’ Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives. It’s not just Sean who has joined the family business as it were and is turning over this new leaf, but it’s also now Danny Reagan is the father to a cop, which he’s never been before.”
Margolis added:
“So there are all these new storytelling lanes to explore. It felt like there was an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change. It is the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different. We love what Mika has brought to Sean, this vulnerability, yet this desire to prove himself. It’s just been great to watch it come to life.”
In an interview with TV Line, Margolis noted:
“It was a gamble to open the show on a new face … but the story required us to love him right away.”
The creative team made a bold move by placing Sean right away in Boston PD, skipping lengthy exposition, and thus allowing a quicker link to the character's new arc and the new dynamic between father and son in a Boston background.
Importantly, Margolis and his team aimed to make Boston Blue not only familiar but also new, retaining the character of Sean at the core of Danny Reagan's life story, yet completely transforming the narrative style, rhythm, and energy of a spin-off.
The recasting also reinforces the story's reasoning: Sean, now a young officer who must undergo the trial of his first days on the force, needed an actor who could present a complete range of emotions, from strength to vulnerability. Mika Amonsen was chosen because of his physical similarities, his ability to connect seamlessly with the new actors, and his preparedness to take on the emotional transformation of Sean.
What is Boston Blue about?

Right from the start, Boston Blue's premiere took the audience on a journey to a different and dramatic locale. Danny Reagan shifts to Boston when Sean is hurt in a fire at a tech firm. This plot pulls Danny out of New York and makes him realize, for the first time, the consequences of having a son in the police force.
The show set itself apart from Blue Bloods right away by focusing on Danny's partnership with the Boston cop Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), whose kin get to be the very heart of the series' emotional aspect.
The first episode of Boston Blue, titled Faith and Family, aired on October 17, 2025. The episode blends the investigation of the fire with Danny's adjustment to his new environment and his collaboration with Lena Silver. Meanwhile, Sean, after recovering from his wounds, begins his rookie patrolman career.
The next episode of Boston Blue, titled Teammates, is scheduled to be broadcast on CBS on October 24, 2025, at 10 PM ET. The main plot of the episode revolves around Danny Reagan and Lena Silver getting involved in a murder investigation that uncovers a connection with a whistleblower related to one of Boston DA Mae Silver's legal proceedings. On the other hand, Sean Reagan and Jonah Silver prepare for their first official day as Boston policemen.
The season will have approximately 12 episodes and will air weekly on Fridays at 10 PM ET, with the finale planned for early January 2026.
Boston Blue is broadcast on CBS in the United States and is also offered for streaming live and on demand via Paramount+ for its subscribers. Paramount+ Essential subscribers have the option of watching the episodes on demand after a day of airing on CBS. For the audience that does not have cable access, live TV streaming services like DIRECTV provide options for watching the series live online.
