Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, has become one of the most popular shows of the Star Trek franchise. The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One aboard the USS Enterprise as they explore the galaxy approximately seven years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Thanks to its strong cast, the nostalgia it brings to the screen, and refreshing storytelling, it quickly became a success among both longtime fans and new viewers. However, Paramount has confirmed the show will end after five seasons.

Why is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ending after five seasons?

On 8th June, 2025, Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season three will be arriving on 17th July 2025. On 12th June, just a month before season three comes out, Paramount+ announced that the show will be ending after five seasons. While fans are still coping with the news, the creators have assured everyone that this was the original plan for the show.

Paramount+ made an Instagram post with an announcement,

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

In the same post, creators and executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman gave a joint statement saying:

“From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope, and the belief that a better future is possible. We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”

It may seem a little sudden that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is going to end after its fifth season, but there is a reason behind the decision. Unlike the original Star Trek series, which was canceled after only three seasons and fell short of its famous “five-year mission,” Strange New Worlds will be able to complete that journey. This is a respectful way to honor the original show’s legacy while ending Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in the right way.

While the creative team had a clear vision for five seasons, practical reasons might have also influenced this decision. Paramount is currently undergoing major changes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company has been making large budget cuts and laying off staff to manage expenses.

Though the exact budget for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hasn’t been made public, producing big shows like this is expensive. Ending the series at five seasons could be a financial decision as well.

Another possible reason behind this decision might be contract negotiations. Once a show completes five seasons, and wants to make more, it often requires new contracts for actors and them asking for higher pay. This can make running a show after five seasons much more costly. Choosing to wrap things up after five seasons may be a smart way to preserve the quality of the show without having to spend more.

While it is disheartening that the show will end after three more seasons, we still have a few years to enjoy it before it's over. Season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to premiere on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+ and will have ten episodes. Seasons four and five are already in development, with season five being the final one. It will be a shorter season with just six episodes, instead of the usual ten, but it promises to give the show the ending it deserves.

Although it’s difficult to say goodbye to a series as beloved as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, there’s comfort in knowing it will end on its own terms, the way it was meant to. With a complete five-season arc and a loyal fanbase, the show will be remembered far longer than its five-season run.

The first two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount+, and a third season arrives on 17th July 2025.
