Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has just been released, and while it revealed the reality of the Upside Down, it also explored a few character arcs. One of the most heartbreaking, yet important scenes of the volume was the fight between Steve and Dustin. Steve and Dustin have been very close friends for quite some time, but in Stranger Things Season 5, their dynamic has been strained. In Volume 1, they barely talk, and even when they do, they argue.

Steve was mad at Dustin for getting himself beaten up by the bullies and thus not being able to be at the crawl, and Dustin, who is still struggling with Eddie's death, was pushing everyone away, especially Steve. In Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2, Chapter Five: Shock Jock, they finally say out loud what they had been keeping buried for months, and we see them get into a full blown fight. Let's look into why exactly these two very good friends and up in an unexpected physical fight.

Why Dustin and Steve fight in Stranger Things Season 5

After Eddie died in Season 4, Dustin hasn't been doing well mentally. Eddie died to save Dustin, Nancy, Steve, and Johnathan, and Dustin was still struggling to cope up with losing one of the only people who really understood him. In Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, we see that in the months after Eddie's death, Dustin had distanced himself from everyone emotionally, and became much quieter and preferred isolation. He also continued the Hellfire Club, which led to him being bullied and beaten up by his school mates.

Thus, he could not make it to the crawl in the beginning of Stranger Things Season 5. It was the crawl in which Eleven and Hopper get stuck in the Upside Down, and the crew lost connection with them, which could have been avoided if Dustin had been there to help with the tracking system. Steve was thus extremely angry with Dustin not showing up on time. After Dustin showed up late, he, Steve, Nancy, and Johnathan managed to follow a Demodog into the Upside Down and managed to communicate with Eleven and Hopper via their walkie-talkies.

But then instead of waiting for them and uniting as a group, they went to the Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down because Dustin had a theory that the gigantic flesh wall we see in the Stranger Things Season 5, is powered by a generator which is in the lab. They set out to look for the generator and destroy it. Steve and Dustin paired up against their will and searched one part of the lab to look for the generator, while Nancy and Johnathan searched another. When they found nothing, Steve got pissed and said that Dustin's theory was wrong.

The two start arguing and exchange some harsh words with Steve saying how Dustin had been messing up, and Dustin pointing out how Steve was going after Nancy when she was with Johnathan. Dustin then said that if Eddie was still alive, he would've known what to do by then. Steve then blurted out,

"If I'm such a goddam idiot, how come I'm the one still standing here?"

This was an extremely hurtful thing to say because Eddie sacrificed himself to protect others, and what Steve said insinuated that he was dumb to do so. Steve also went on to say,

"Eddie wanted to play hero and he made a dumb call, and he got himself killed."

This was the last straw for Dustin, understandably so, and he yelled at Steve to shut up and charged at him. The two had an intense physical fight until they were both on the ground, tired. Steve then walked away saying,

"I'm done."

The two were thus in a really bad spot at this stage of Stranger Things Season 5. At the end of the episode, we see Dustin finally figure out that the Upside Down is the bridge, and basically a wormhole between Earth and The Abyss, where Eleven had initially sent Henry to. He discovers this right before Nancy and Johnathan come across a strange sphere over the lab when they get to the terrace. This sphere is what holds the wall, and thus the bridge together. Dustin tried to warn Nancy and Johnathan not to shoot at the sphere through his walkie-talkie, but there's no signal, and Nancy shoots at it, which creates a disturbance in the power source, leading to things around the wall getting sucked into it.

Parts of the Hawkins Lab also begin to melt and Nancy and Johnathan are injured by the blast created by Nancy shooting at the sphere. In the next episode, Chapter Six: Escape from Camazotz, to save them, Steve tries to use a ladder when a whole staircase has melted off. But Dustin stops him saying,

"You always try to get yourself killed, and I can't let it happen again. Stop being so selfish, please. If you go on there, you're gonna die, and I can't deal iwith it again. You can't die 'cause I can't deal with it it again."

This is an extremely important scene of Stranger Things Season 5 because it shows how much he loves Steve, and is scared that he'll meet the same fate as Eddie if he keeps endangering his life. We also see Dustin in tears, vulnerable, and finally voicing his fears, saying it out loud that he can't handle another of his best friends dying, that he won't be able to go through losing Steve. Steve understands how hurt and scared Dustin is and abandons the plan of using the ladder, and hugs him instead. They thus reconcile, and the ladder soon gives away, due to it being unstable, and we see how Dustin also indirectly saves Steve's life.

Dustin and Steve do fight, and luckily neither dies in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2. Thankfully, the characters also reconcile in this volume, allowing them to focus on the actual final battle that we'll see on New Year's Eve. Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 3 will be released on Netflix on New Year's Eve at 5 pm PT.
