Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5 is set to be released on Netflix in less than twelve hours, and fans all over the world are excited to watch how it all goes down because it's the final season. All the episodes aren't going to be released together, with Volumes 2 and 3 getting released on Christmas and New Year's Eve. However, even that hasn't deterred the fans from being supportive. That is all because it's the very last season of the show.

Stranger Things has been airing for almost a decade since its release in 2016 and is one of Netflix's most successful shows. While fans might have wished for more seasons and adventures set in Hawkins, Season 5 is going to be the last season of the show, and director Shawn Levy has explained why.

Why is Stranger Things Season 5 the last season of the show?

A common mistake many good shows have made over the years is that they have overstayed. Sometimes it's better to tell a story even if it lasts just a few seasons and end it on a beautiful note, rather than drag it just for the sake of views, money, or contracts. Stranger Things, fortunately, is not making the same mistake, as director and executive producer Shawn Levy mentioned in an interview with ScreenRant.

He said,

"none of us wanted to overstay our welcome"

The Duffer Brothers have meticulously managed to fit the entire story in five seasons, and thus, Stranger Things Season 5 is the last one, wrapping it all up. While there is an animated spinoff coming out in 2026, titled Tales From '85, it will not change the main show. As Shawn Levy also pointed out, the Duffer Brothers

"have known for a while"

how the show was going to end. Thus, they

"didn't want to drag it out"
"repeating themselves or overstaying their story welcome."

Speaking more on why ending the show with Season 5 felt right to him, Shawn Levy said,

"The truth is that the main reason it feels right is I've had one North Star that I've followed since the day I read this pilot script from a couple of unknown twin brothers, which is I'm here to champion, support, and help the Duffer voice and vision."

Levy has been a huge supporter of the vision the Duffer Brothers had for the show, and it's nice to see that he's championing for them till the end. Levy also praised the Stranger Things Season 5 finale by saying it is a

"a magnificent Duffer finale episode,"

and also saying it is

"satisfying"

Since fans won't know the show's ending until New Year's Eve, it might be good to hear a director and executive producer of the show confirm that the ending is indeed satisfying. Speaking of the season and the finale episode, Levy also said that,

"It is deeply emotional. It explains a lot, which is not easy to do with so many characters that you also need to pay off. But somehow this season, the work of Matt and Ross achieves that."

Stranger Things Season 5 marks the end of an era, and it is ending the story at the right time, not dragging it out unnecessarily. Fans will surely miss the show and occasionally wish it ran for longer seasons, but Stranger Things Season 5 is setting up to be a satisfying and memorable final season.

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 will be released on Netflix on November 26, 2025, at 8 pm ET. The next two volumes will be released on Christmas and New Year's Eve, respectively.
