When it comes to some of the most faithful adaptations of Wattpad, The Rain in España stands out for staying true to the story and character arcs. The Filipino drama follows two young college students, Luna and Kalix, as they navigate an emotional journey.

As the show begins, Louisse Natasha Valeria aka Luna (played by Heaven Peralejo) kicks off her college by enrolling as an architecture student. Whereas Kalix Jace Martinez, or simply Kalix is seen as a legal management student.

When Luna sees Kalix for the first time, she's immediately drawn to him. He becomes her crush, and Luna feels incredibly happy to be around him. However, Kalix initially didn't seem interested in Luna, but was also secretly finding her interesting.

An adorable love affair develops in The Rain in España, but the journey is not always easy. The situation takes a painful turn when Kalix's loyalty is called into question, leading to a heartbreak and breakup between him and Luna.

These moments leave them both emotionally wounded as they part ways. But the story doesn’t end here. Luna and Kalix meet again, but after almost a decade.

How The Rain in España gets growing up just right

The Rain in España not only presented us with a love story, but it also showed us the crazy and emotional rollercoaster during our early twenties. Here's why the series resonated so strongly with viewers, particularly students and young adults:

1) Messy but real campus relationships

Contrary to most fairy tale romances, Luna and Kalix's relationship in The Rain in España demonstrates how overwhelming and perplexing love can be. Because they're trying to find out who they are to begin with, the two also hurt one another, and their relationship becomes complicated because of miscommunication.

As seen in the drama, Amethyst tries to mess with Kalix's relationship with Luna and she even succeeds as Kalix fails to explain the situation. At the same time Luna remembered that Kalix's mother never really liked her and that she wanted to see him with some other girl.

This captures true college romance stories in which the heart is aching, and people end up making impulsive decisions. Just like Luna broke up with Kalix and didn't care about what he wanted to say.

2) Family expectations Vs personal dreams

Another reason why The Rain in España resonates well with viewers is how it depicts the struggle between passion and practicality. Even though both of Kalix's parents are doctors, he decided to become an attorney.

His parents did not support him because they wanted Kalix to take the same route. This is the actual pressure most students experience in their lives as they want to pursue their dream, but also do not want to hurt their loved ones.

Kalix had to give it all to prove he could be an attorney. If his parents had supported him, it would have been a little easier and less stressful for him.

3) Academic pressure affects mental health

While Luna never really felt pressurized about studies, Kalix was always battling stress and emotional burnout. His parents told him that if he doesn’t score well in management, they’ll make him join medical school and become a doctor instead.

Kalix was a high achiever until he began a relationship with Luna. Not because she was distracting him, but because Kalix wanted to ensure being with her most of the time.

The Rain in España doesn’t glamorize student life. It gets real about anxiety, frustration and the feeling of being lost. It's something many students face but don’t always talk about.

4) Closure and a second chance in The Rain in España

One of the strongest themes in The Rain in España is that not every first love ends forever. Luna and Kalix did break up in college, but they reconnected after building strong careers, and since they were still in love, the two finally chose to get back together.

The drama beautifully depicts that sometimes all you need is space. Both Kalix and Luna achieved their dreams, and the second chance felt more real than the time they spent in college.
