The character's departure from the series was primarily due to the evolving dynamics between Bailey and Tucker. As mentioned briefly above, Bailey's career progressed, and the extent of her commitment as a doctor was beyond Tucker's comprehension. This led to some tensions in their marriage, and in Season 4, episode 15, Losing My Mind, Tucker simply takes Tuck to daycare and moves ahead, discussing his concern with Bailey. But the scene offers more drama when Bailey keeps occupied with her surgeries, which depicts how disconnected they both have grown.

At this point, their relationship eventually culminated in divorce, and in season 5, episode 24, titled Now or Never, Bailey is shown choosing her career over marriage. This further explores his personal passion, professional responsibilities, and relationships amidst the high-pressure emergency room situations in Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

According to reports, the actor's exit was not because of any personal reason or conflict, but his character getting written off; therefore, it was a creative decision. The show now focuses on developing Bailey's storyline and career aspirations solely.

The couple is shown married for 10 years before they feature in Grey's Anatomy. Bailey is more practical, being a veteran surgeon and managing the hospital, while Tucker is shown to be quieter, and even when the family responsibility became too much for him, he never stepped back. In one of the episodes, their son Tuck faced some breathing problems following an accident. Tucker, after getting him to the hospital, books a room for himself in the hotel for the night, as he is too overwhelmed to go home and probably just willing to absorb the cold and lonesome night for some time.

Williams stars as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, a high school principal who becomes a vigilante superhero in Black Lightning (2018–2021), and in Living Single (1993–1998), he played Terrence "Scooter" Williams, a love interest to Queen Latifah's character, Khadijah James. This show was the highlight of Cress Williams' career. Along with this, he also shares credits in some films like The Violent Heart and What Remains.
