The final few minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 managed to completely overshadow every single second that came before it, whether it's Vecna leaving the Upside Down to confront the Hawkins gang or his horrific killing of the soldiers. However, now that the shock of Will's powers has subsided, we can look deeper into some of the other exciting parts of the first volume of Stranger Things Season 5.
One of these was Max, who was alive and trapped in Vecna's mindscape, approaching Holly, Mike's little sister, who was also kidnapped by Vecna and his Demogorgons. Max reveals that she had stayed alive in Vecna's mindscape because she had made her home in a cave that Henry Creel, aka Vecna, was himself scared to enter.
The fact that the man who has all of Hawkins under military supervision was scared of entering a cave left the audience stumped. Well, the reason behind Vecna not entering goes further than just Stranger Things Season 5.

What is this cave that Max calls her home in Vecna's mindscape in Stranger Things Season 5

Stranger Things Season 4 ended on an especially dubious note for Hawkins and especially for Sadie Sink's Max, who was Vecna's fourth target to open a rift between Hawkins and the Upside Down. It was revealed in the final episode that despite Eleven's attempts to find Max, she had ended up in a coma after her confrontation with Vecna.
Stranger Things Season 5 revealed that Max had actually found herself trapped in Vecna's mindscape. After Max finds out that Vecna had kidnapped Holly Wheeler for undisclosed reasons, she decides to tell Holly the reality of Mr Whatsit, as she knows Vecna and how Max ended up in his mindscape.
Holly, as well as the audience, finds out that after travelling through a lot of Henry Creel's memories in Hawkins, Max found herself in this cave, which was also Henry's memories. However, when Henry Creel, aka Vecna, tried to follow Max into the cave, he couldn't step inside, and according to Max, he looked almost scared. So, she decided to make this cave her home to stay alive (but trapped) in his mindscape.
Why is Henry Creel, aka Vecna, scared of this cave on Stranger Things Season 5

It was quite intriguing that Henry Creel was scared of entering a simple cave. The show itself did not offer any explanations as to why he was scared, but eagle-eyed fans were quick to connect the dots to the Stranger Things: First Shadow play that is running on Broadway. However, despite all the signs pointing to Max's home being the same cave that is seen in the play, it wasn't a confirmed conclusion.
Well, until the Duffer brothers sat down for a conversation with Variety, where they revealed that the Stranger Things play was canon, and the events of the play are actually being referenced in Stranger Things Season 5. The cave that Max has called her home is actually a cave in Nevada, where Henry Creel experienced something exceptionally strange in connection to the Upside Down as a kid himself. The Duffer brothers confirmed the same:
"There was always a balance that we had to find in terms of how much we were going to put in the play. [The director] Stephen [Daldry] and [the producer] Sonia [Friedman] were always pushing for more, and we were pushing back and saying, 'Well, we have to wait to reveal that in the show.' You'll see, especially as you reach the final episode, there's more overlap with the play."
So, we'll have to wait until the final episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 to actually discover what happened in the cave that the big, bad Vecna is scared of entering.
