FX's Alien: Earth, Noah Hawley's latest sci-fi entry in the Alien franchise, saw an unusual friendship between the first hybrid-human, Wendy, and a baby xenomorph in Episode 4.

Hawley's series is not only heavy on sci-fi elements, but it is also progressing with impressive character development and philosophical questions like never before seen in the franchise. Episode 4 was another such hour, where Wendy connected with her brother Joe after he visited her in the lab.

Elsewhere, Boy Kavalier sees their connection as an opportunity to manipulate Wendy and use her to decipher alien frequency. Since she killed a fully-grown Xenomorph in Episode 3, it was established that she can not only decipher alien language but can also mimic it to perfection.

In Alien: Earth Episode 4's final moments, Wendy befriends the baby xenomorph to help Boy Kavalier decipher their frequency, following which, she will be able to keep Joe by her side on the Island.

More on this in our story.

Boy Kavalier's experiments saw a breakthrough in Alien: Earth Episode 4, when he realised that his latest hybrid, Wendy, could hear alien frequency. Being the first elite synthetic being, Wendy could not only hear this frequency but also mimic it to perfection, which excited Boy Kavalier and suggested what is next in line for Hawley's sci-fi series.

Wendy, who still thinks that she can return to her home and leave the island one day, connects with her brother Joe in Episode 4. While their brother-sister equation has drastically changed, thanks to Wendy's synthetic body, they still share the same connection and explore it more deeply throughout the latest episode of Alien: Earth. Boy Kavalier sees this as a way to manipulate Wendy and uses this to force his hybrid to decipher alien language.

The final moments of Episode 4 saw Boy Kavalier making a deal with Wendy, where he would let Joe stay by her side if she would help Prodigy communicate with the aliens and decipher what they are trying to say.

Left with no choice, Wendy returns to the lab and carefully examines Joe's chittering lung. Suddenly, the lung pulsates and explodes with a baby Xenomorph. However, instead of attacking Wendy, it's attracted by Wendy's mimicking sounds. Alien: Earth Episode 4 concludes with Wendy befriending the baby Xenomorph and touching it like her personal pet, hinting at her strong connection with the alien species.

Noah Hawley breaks down Wendy's connection with Xenomorphs in Alien: Earth Episode 4

While Wendy's effort to befriend the baby Xenomorph was a way for her to keep her brother in proximity on the Island, it also hints at a new direction in Hawley's sci-fi show. Alien: Earth is gradually progressing towards humanizing its alien species like never before in the franchise. Since Wendy is essentially like a child, she is fascinated by the baby xenomorph and exhibits sympathy for it, unlike the other characters, who see it as a looming threat to humanity.

Breaking down Wendy's connection with the baby Xenomorph in Alien: Earth Episode 4, Hawley said in an interview with Decider:

“Nothing is accidental to a kid, right? You know, everything feels meaningful. There’s a moment in the fourth hour where she’s like, ‘They chose me.’ Right? Which is not true. Right? They didn’t choose her. She just can hear them because of whatever hardware or software issue that she has.”

He added:

“The other thing with children is they don’t really assign… I mean, these are just animals to them, you know? So she she’s looking at these creatures and she has empathy...Well, these creatures didn’t ask to come here, and maybe they’re frightened.”

While Wendy's connection to the xenomorph seems to be pure and innocent for now, it will surely be manipulated by Boy Kavalier in the upcoming episodes.
