A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a fresh new American fantasy drama series. It is set in the Game of Thrones setting and is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg series. Long before the events of Game of Thrones, the plot revolved around Ser Duncan the Tall, an impoverished hedge knight, and his squire, Aegon "Egg" Targaryen. The primary protagonists in the series are Dexter Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey, and the six episodes will air on HBO on January 18, 2026. The program has a relation to the bigger A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. There are no dragons in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This is because the narrative takes place decades after the Targaryen dragons had become extinct due to the Dance of the Dragons. In line with the smaller, simpler tone of the original novellas, the show also focuses on a more genuine, intimate story of Ser Duncan and Egg.More about Dragons in A Knight of the Seven KingdomsSet in the Game of Thrones universe, the new HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is very different from previous adaptations. One of the most noticeable differences may surprise fans who are used to seeing dragons play significant parts in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon: there are no dragons at all. However, this artistic judgment is deeply ingrained in both the historical chronology of Westeros and the tone of the book being translated. The series takes place in the year 209 AC (After Aegon's Conquest), over a century before Game of Thrones and several decades after House of the Dragon. At this moment in history, dragons had vanished from Westeros. The Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen civil conflict that resulted in devastating casualties among the remaining dragons, is inextricably connected to their fate. Later dragons were small, weak, and frequently died soon after birth, with fewer living long enough to reproduce.By 153 AD, it was thought that all that remained of dragons were ancient eggs and memories. By the time A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place, dragons are thus extinct. Even if people are still aware of them, they are more of a historical symbol than a living force.Their absence modifies the political power structure in Westeros. The Targaryens' enormous advantage, which formerly enabled them to conquer and govern the kingdom easily, is lost with the loss of dragons.Although their dynasty still exists, its power is comparable to that of a typical noble family. The Targaryens retain enough authority to stay in power for many decades, but other houses start to perceive an opening. Dragons' old power only reappears when Daenerys Targaryen brings them back to the planet decades later.Rather than kings and royal strategists, their voyage shows the lives of ordinary people. This realistic approach influences both the narrative and the presentation; the extravagant opening shots of previous seasons have been replaced with a more plain title board.
