For months now, fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty have been asking the same question repeatedly online: why isn't there going to be a Season 4 of the show?

The series was an extremely emotional series for many, and most wanted to continue on with Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah for at least one more season. So, when the announcement hit that The Summer I Turned Pretty would no longer continue with another season but rather culminate in a movie instead, fans were left confused as to the reason behind this change.

The reality behind this isn't dramatic; it is very plain and simple; it mainly comes from how the original author and creator of the books, Jenny Han, thinks about the story. She has stated in many interviews that The Summer I Turned Pretty was constructed using the three books as a structure of the series, and each season corresponds with a book in the series.

The conclusion to The Summer I Turned Pretty's season 3 meant that Han's original narrative arc of Belly was concluded. The story was not to be forced beyond the point of completion. It had reached the natural conclusion that was very much in line with how fans connected with the story, and at no point did Han want to deviate from this by creating any additional content for the sake of prolonging the completion of the volume.

Jenny Han's decision to move toward a The Summer I Turned Pretty movie

One of the first times that Jenny Han expressed this notion to the public occurred during an interview given by her and published on November 20, 2025, by The Hollywood Reporter. Han stated that she had written a film version of The Summer I Turned Pretty, and that this second part of Belly's journey would be better-suited for a film format instead of continuing to create a lengthy episode format to complete the journey. In her explanation, she stated the film allows her to spend more time developing the characters without having to schedule a lengthy series of episodes.

Han also mentioned at TheWrap's Power Women Summit, on December 2, 2025, that nothing had been filmed yet. She said very honestly that people should not expect the movie anytime soon. The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 ended late in the year, and there simply was no time to begin filming a whole movie right away. She even said she knew fans hoped for a Christmas release, but she made it clear that it was impossible. She had just finished writing the script, and the process of filmmaking needs time, planning, and everyone's availability.

One more thing that matters here is that Han is directing the movie herself. She directed earlier episodes of the series and said that she had really enjoyed the whole process. In her opinion, both movies and television series allow her to tell a story, and she wanted to be able to have control over how the last chapter of Belly's journey ends for her. Because of this connection, she feels a movie structure would allow her to present an entire chapter at once rather than trying to spread it out over episodes.

How did the story of The Summer I Turned Pretty end, and why does it feel final?

Looking at the end of Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty makes sense why Season 4 would feel out of place. Belly has always lived in the world of a love triangle between Conrad and Jeremiah, and the emotions that came with that were the heart of the entire series. After all of the heartache that Belly experienced, the travel, the breakups and trying to live her life as an adult, she ultimately found her way back to Conrad. The reunion they had in Paris worked well to bring the audience some peace after all of the suspense experienced in past episodes.

Because the books ended in a similar way, the show stayed in line with the original storyline. Making an entire season after that would mean inventing new conflicts that were never meant to exist. And according to Han, that is not something she wanted. She did not want to force drama just to keep the show alive.

The movie will likely show how Belly and Conrad adjust to regular life again, how their families handle everything, and maybe how Jeremiah moves forward, too. But instead of dragging all that out, the film on The Summer I Turned Pretty will give a shorter, gentler look at life after the big ending.
