Katic said that their strategy for the plot was a three-season timeline, even though they at times "danced with the idea" of extending it. Absentia launched with Emily, who was an FBI special agent and mother. She vanished while hunting a Boston serial killer. Declared dead, she resurfaced six years later with no memory of what happened. Katic’s post also talked about shooting for three years in Bulgaria, where they forged creative partnerships, and Emily’s went from victim to "empowered architect of her own future." She thanked the cast, crew, Amazon, Sony, AXN, Showcase, and even said that she hopes for a graphic novel continuation!Season 3 itself premiered on July 17, 2020, and ran for ten episodes.
