Fans of the classic NBC sitcom Blossom are in for a huge heartbreak as Mayim Bialik, the actor who played the show’s titular character, confirmed on her Substack on Monday about Disney’s decision to not go forward with the reboot project.
In the article where she broke the news, Bialik also mentioned that she and Blossom creator Don Reo talked about rebooting the series after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019.
The two also approached Disney with the quick script that Reo had come up with and at that time, the studio seemed to love it. However, after multiple executive changes and mergers when Bialik and Reo again approached the studio, they were told that the project could not be taken forward.
Blossom reboot is not happening as of now
Talking about the reboot script that Reo had quickly put together, Bialik said,
“He found our characters exactly where many of us find ourselves — funny, lost, wandering, meandering, and torn. The script is beautiful.”
When they had first pitched it, the network also seemed to hold the same opinion. However, Bialik’s busy schedule did not allow the duo to start working on the project immediately and therefore, now that there have been multiple changes in the studio, the same script that had seemed brilliant a year ago was now deemed to be not fit for production.
In her article explaining what happened, Bialik said,
“For no particular reason, we were told ‘no.’ We asked for the rights so that we could let the market decide if audiences might want to see these characters all these years later. We were told Disney reserves the rights in case they ever want to do a reboot of Blossom.”
She further added,
“The reboot we all wanted to do was now, with Don’s script. We will likely never know … why they would not let us bring these beautiful stories to people who love 90s nostalgia and who have a special place in their hearts for Blossom.”
However, despite Disney not picking up the reboot script, Bialik did not seem completely hopeless about the same. She mentioned,
“I hope there will be more to this story someday. But for now, the God’s honest truth is this project is the role I want to play more than any other. Since this all fell apart, my desire to continue to pursue on-camera roles has waned. The constant changing of guards in our industry, the mergers, the insincerity and the increasingly extended periods of time it takes to get answers or contracts completed… It’s not the industry Don and I grew up in, and Blossom felt like my last attempt to try and assert myself as an actress.”
She also added,
“While it is possible no one wants a Blossom reboot, I’m pretty certain Disney got this one wrong. The sun is gonna surely shine. Maybe not the way Don and I intended, but this door closed. While we didn’t want it to, we are powerless over every aspect of it except what we know to be true: we loved this possibility with all that we have and we are so so sorry we couldn’t get it to happen.”
Blossom premiered on NBC in 1990 and ran for 5 seasons till 1995.
