Created by Derek Haas, Countdown is a crime drama series that recently premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 25, 2025, and was in the news because of its star-studded cast, which included Jensen Ackles. Countdown followed LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), who gets into a covert task force with undercover agents from various other law enforcement agencies, as a Department of Homeland Security officer is killed in broad daylight.
However, Meachum and his colleagues soon realize that there is a much bigger conspiracy at hand, one that can risk the lives of millions of people in a city. Ackles plays a reckless and moody Meachum, and along with him, other cast members include Jessica Camacho, Eric Dane, and others.
While the show received mixed reviews regarding its pacing and plot, it also garnered appreciation for its action scenes. Further, Season 1 of the series ended on a cliffhanger as Camacho’s character had her life put at risk. Therefore, speculations are rife about Countdown Season 2, and in an interview with TVLine, creator Derek Haas talks about the possibility.
Details about Countdown getting a Season 2

Derek Haas talks about the finale of Season 1 and the possibility of a new season with TVLine. Speaking about the cliffhanger in Season 1, Haas mentions that it is Grant Harvey’s character, Todd, who kidnaps Camacho’s character, Oliveras. Further, he teases that Todd will shoot her, as that is the plan. Whether he does that or not will have to be seen as Season 1 has finished. However, Haas did not mention directly about Season 2 and wanted fans to stay engaged with the series.
Derek Haas also talked about the future of Countdown in another interview with TVLine and mentioned that he was optimistic about the show’s next steps. He also comments that he has never done streaming before and is therefore trying to learn the tricks of the business. “It's different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever," he states.
For those who don’t know, Haas was the person behind Chicago Fire till 2023. He mentions that, “I said this before with Chicago Fire…I was like, as long as people keep showing up, we'll keep making it…So I will say the same thing about this: As long as people keep watching and digging it, then we will keep making it."
The creator also talks about the character returning and states that he wants all of them to come back, “I like returning faces.” He states that viewers create a bond with the characters, and even though he earlier worked on shows with more episodes, he still wants to take it slow and keep the characters for a long time, so that the viewers can stay connected to them.
More details about Countdown Season 2

In an interview with TV Insider, Jensen Ackles talks about how the cliffhanger ending of Todd kidnapping Oliveras will propel his character further in the next season. “I am excited to see how motivated Meachum gets once he hears the news of where she is and what’s happened to her,” Ackles states. Further, the actor mentions that his “forbidden love” is now at risk; therefore, his character will have to develop in new ways. Ackles says that Todd should be worried, as viewers have not seen the full recklessness of Meachum, and now that Oliveras is kidnapped, this incident might just bring out that inner fire within Meachum. Ackles also states that Meachum might have toned down his feelings for Oliveras, but he wants a “second chance” with her, and his feelings have certainly “blossomed” as the show progressed. Therefore, the actor is eagerly awaiting the next season’s renewal.
