Will Ferrell is stepping off the big screen into something new, a comedy series on Netflix about golf, also titled Golf. This is his first television comedy show, and the concept is as hilarious as ever. Will Ferrell will be a fictional golf champion whose massive ego, passion for the game, and annoyingly bad habits will wreak havoc.

Fans are pumped by the news as it reminds them of the old Ferrell style, who stood out for his over-the-top confidence, goofy charm, and full of laugh-out-loud moments. In addition to that, the show brings him back together with Molly Shannon, his former comedy partner on Saturday Night Live. There will also be some new faces to the cast who will share the screen (and maybe a few golf swings) with Ferrell.

Netflix has already greenlit 10 episodes, and the project is supported by Will Ferrell’s own production company, Gloria Sanchez, as well as Rian Johnson's T-Street.

What is the story about, and Will Ferrell's role

The show is based on Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a fictitious golf superstar who is both lovable and also sloppy, and it will be played by Will Ferrell. This is a huge change to Will Ferrell's career, who has starred in movies all his life, and this is his first time in the lead of a comedy series on television. Those are, to say the least, the jokes and character interactions may span ten episodes, rather than a mere two-hour story.

Running jokes, humorous competitions, and steady plot development will be the pillars of Golf. The pro sports world is also mocked in the show, including the extravagant golf traditions, celebrity culture, and clubhouse drama. Ferrell is co-producing behind the scenes, using his own company, Gloria Sanchez, along with T-Street.

Cast and characters

Molly Shannon will play the role of Stacy, the loud and unapologetic ex who will provide plenty of laughs as she collides with Ferrell’s character, named Hawk in Golf. It is also a pleasant reunion between the two, as they have a long history of comedy togetherness dating back to SNL.

With the cast comes Jimmy Tatro as Lance, Hawk’s son, who also happens to be an unexpectedly good golfer. Fortune Feimster will be portraying the role of Sam, a happy little caddie who could end up being Hawk’s good luck charm.

What can we expect

The timing of this show is just right; sports television needs a satirical piece. Amongst the excessive branding, melodramatic feuds, and glitzy competitions, there is much to laugh at. And not to forget the goofy, ridiculous style of Will Ferrell is exactly what is needed to take a poke at the glitz and the petty politics behind the leaderboards.

At this juncture, it is planned that production for Golf would start after the core cast is locked in and Ferrell completes his film assignments. It has been indicated that cameras may begin to roll out by the end of 2025, but Netflix has not announced any official release date or schedule yet.

The audience should look forward to both large-scale humorous scenes (golf course meltdowns) and smaller, character-related ones. This will be about Hawk and his relationships with his ex, his son, and his new caddie, who is strangely paired, and prove that even harebrained circumstances can result in genuine emotional rewards. Golf can be a fresh, notable way of letting Will Ferrell shine on and behind the television screen, with heart and his notorious weirdness.
