Hacks was on a roll at the 77th Emmys, earning three awards at the ceremony for its recently released fourth season.
Jean Smart won another Emmy for her lead performance as stand-up comedian Deborah, while Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy for playing Deborah's young writer and colleague, Ava. The latter also spoke about the show's future with Variety and mentioned that its forthcoming fifth season will be its last one.
That's why the publication asked HBO's Casey Bloys about the show's eventual fate and when it would return after the fifth season. Bloys replied,
"We usually leave that up to the creators, so I will wait to hear from them. But obviously, we’ve had conversations about it. Ultimately, it will be their decision."
Bloys didn't offer any definitive update about the final season of Hacks, or whether it will be the fifth one, but based on his words, the decision is up to the showrunners.
The HBO team may be hoping for the creative team to take a call based on the scope of Deborah and Ava's arc they have in mind, while considering whether they can be concluded with its fifth season or will need another season or two.
Hacks was planned with a five-season arc in mind

Hacks marked another major win for HBO throughout the night of the 77th Emmys ceremony, where it broke big with its breakout hit medical drama The Pitt, the DC series The Penguin, and an unexpected but much-deserved win for Jeff Hiller for his supporting act in the dramedy series Somebody Somewhere.
Jean Smart won her fourth Emmy playing Deborah, while Hannah Einbinder earned her first for her role as Ava. HBO'sCasey Bloys addressed those wins in his interview with Variety, saying,
"I think it was great that Hannah was recognized. And of course, I think Jean (Smart) is amazing, incomparable, so I always love to see her work recognized. But it was really nice to see Hannah break through."
Before this interview, Einbeinder spoke on the red carpet about Hacks season 5, where she called it the show's last. She shared her feelings about this creative decision and how she prefers it instead of a show overstaying its welcome. While referring to Hacks' fifth season, the actress said,
“I think it will feel different. We’re going to start [filming] next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know? I think it’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
Later, after her award win, Einbinder offered an unclear update about the show's fate. She referred to the creative team of Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello, and said,
“Paul, Jen, and Lucia are the true arbiters of that being true, ultimately. But I think the original plan was that they saw a five-season arc in their initial pitch for the show.”
On this note, Variety asked Bloys whether he is okay with the creative's decision. He replied:
"Oh yeah, I will be good with their decision. But I think they’ll end up in the right place."
Hacks is streaming on HBO Max.
