When Hannibal aired on NBC between 2013 and 2015, it received critical acclaim for its writing and performances. Based on Thomas Harris’s novels, the show revolved around the dynamics between an FBI criminal profiler named Will Graham and a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, who was secretly a serial killer.
Despite its critical success, the show was canceled by NBC after three seasons due to low viewership, leading to disappointment among fans. For more than a decade, audiences have been wondering whether there is a possibility of Hannibal Season 4.
Series creator Bryan Fuller has now finally talked about the potential return of the psychological horror-thriller. In an interview with ScreenRant, the creator said that while he and the cast members are willing to make another season, the show is currently stuck in the middle of a copyright issue, which is making its return difficult.
Bryan Fuller reveals copyright issues are stopping him from making Hannibal Season 4
During the interview, Bryan Fuller revealed that while there were talks of bringing back Hannibal, the rights to the show have proved to be an obstacle in creating a fourth season. Martha De Laurentiis, who served as an executive producer on the TV show, held a portion of the rights, but she has sadly now passed away.
Meanwhile, Thomas Harris, the author on whose work the show is based, is now trying to gather the rights. Fuller said that a fourth season will only be possible once this issue is sorted out, which could take a few years:
“Well, it's complicated now because Martha De Laurentiis died and she had a certain section of the rights, and now, Thomas Harris is trying to get the rights all under one umbrella. And I think that's going to take a couple of years of straightening out.”
However, despite the difficulties, the cast and crew members wish to make another season of Hannibal and reprise their roles. These include Mads Mikkelsen (who played Dr. Hannibal Lecter), Hugh Dancy (who played Will Graham), Laurence Fishburne (Jack Crawford), Caroline Dhavernas (Dr. Alana Bloom), and Katie O'Connell, who was an executive producer on the show. Fuller said:
“But the entire cast wants to come back: Mads, Hugh, Lawrence, Katie, Caroline - like everybody’s in. It's just a matter of: Will the rights be able to be figured out again?”
Hence, Hannibal Season 4 is not currently in the works, but the production team is willing to start work on it once the rights issue is cleared out. The show originally premiered on NBC in April 2013.
It told the story of Will Graham, an FBI criminal profiler investigating serial killer cases. The team then hired Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist, to supervise him, unaware of the fact that he was a serial killer and a cannibal.
While Lecter initially worked to manipulate cases being handled by the FBI, he later got infatuated with Graham and tried to turn him into a serial killer as well. The show earned praise, but its viewership dwindled over the years, after which NBC canceled it in 2015.
Hannibal is available to stream on Prime Video.
