Jason Momoa's much-anticipated TV series Chief of War arrived in August 2025, and fans cannot stop discussing the story. Not only this, but Momoa has also contributed to the show as its co-creator, co-writer, and executive producer.
At the heart of the story are the native people who describe how the Hawaiian Islands were unified at the end of the 18th century. Another interesting fact about the Chief of War is that most of the cast members are Polynesian, as Momoa wanted it to be authentic.
Since only three episodes are left, fans are speculating if Ka’iana and Kupuohi's relationship will fall apart due to the love triangle. As they believe Ka’iana is dead, Kupuohi and her brother-in-law, Namake, get closer.
While the two were grieving the loss of a family member, Kupuohi and Namake ended up changing their relationship. They even have an intimate moment in Episode 4, which hints that Kupuohi is now drawn to her brother-in-law.
Notably, Namake has always been in love with her. He tried to make her believe that Ka’iana is no more and that she should move on. Despite her initial resistance, Kupuohi eventually stepped into a love triangle.
Kaʻiana’s return in Chief of War Episode 5 brought reunion and heartbreak

Chief of War Episode 5 includes a reunion that everyone has longed for between Kaʻiana and his family, but it is not simple. Although everyone is relieved to have Kaʻiana back alive, there is silence during the first moments of Kaʻiana's return with Kupuohi.
Kupuohi had begun her process of moving on from Kaʻiana, developing an emotional bond with Namake, under the assumption Kaʻiana would never come back. Their emotional bond developed to the point of tenderness, and while Kupuohi never stopped loving her husband, this bond is not easily erased.
These events have awakened Kaʻiana from his death with Namake's fragile hope that he could be romantic with Kupuohi. This creates a conflict for Namake, as he celebrates his brother's return after his death and grieves his love for the woman he could not pursue.
The triangle in Chief of War is more than a subplot. It is a part of the story that defines Kaʻiana. Changing the narrative of Kaʻiana are transformations that have changed him. He has emerged from exile, witnessed colonialism, and returned with imported guns and tactics.
More importantly, he will no longer just be a warrior. He's surrounded by uncertainty in his relationship with Kupuohi. The rift between Kupuohi and Namake is still shrouded in shadows, and Kaʻiana’s reunion may quickly turn from celebration into confrontation after he realizes how deeply Namake desires to be with Kupuohi.
This unresolved tension in the Chief of War could destabilize Kaʻiana’s personal life just as he steps into Hawaii’s political storms.
The shadow of prophecy over Kaʻiana’s fate in Chief of War

The love triangle between Kaʻiana, Kupuohi, and Namake isn't just about romance. It also connects to the bigger themes of prophecy, betrayal, and fate in Chief of War. Kupuohi is torn between two paths. She is married to Kaʻiana, but in her darkest times, she leaned on Namake for comfort.
This forces her to question her ultimate loyalty. For Namake, it is heartbreaking: he loves Kupuohi, but feels a responsibility to his brother Kaʻiana. However, it is possible that this conflict may turn into feelings of resentment that could eventually break up the family.
For Kaʻiana, knowing the truth might be more painful than a wound suffered in battle. History has already recorded Kaʻiana as a marked traitor, dying in the Battle of Nuʻuanu. The show seems to draw a connection between his family's personal tension at home and his tragedy. If Kaʻiana were to find out about Kupuohi and Namake's relationship, he could feel even further betrayed and lonely.
