Apple TV's Chief of War, Thomas Paʻa Sibbett and Jason Momoa's Hawaiian historical series, follows the real events of the late 18th century, when the four major kingdoms of the Hawaiian Islands were locked in a major war that eventually led to the unification of Hawaii.
While Kaina Makua's Kamehameha I, the first ruler of Hawaii, is one of the most popular Hawaiian figures, the show is centred around Momoa's warrior Kaʻiana, who rebelled against Hawaii's unification and became famous for his many trips across the islands.
Taking a break from Kaʻiana's many trips, Chief of War Episode 3 introduced Kamehameha I, who returned to the Kaʻu District to meet the dying king Kalani’ōpu’u and his cousin Keoua. Since Kalani’ōpu’u is on his last legs, the throne is to be passed on to his son Keoua.
While the prophecy has already chosen Kamehameha I as the rightful King of Hawaii, Keoua is already strategizing a war against Kahekili. Being the legal and natural successor to the throne, Keoua is one of the major obstacles in front of his cousin, who will certainly try to become the king. Chief of War's upcoming episodes will explore the power struggles between the two brothers and how Keoua will become a threat to Kamehameha I's rise as King.
More on this in our story.
What is the Hawaiian King's prophecy in Chief of War Episode 3?
Chief of War Episode 3 introduced Kamehameha, the most famous Hawaiian around the world, and the eventual conqueror and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Kaina Makua's character is introduced as a young, handsome, and strong warrior, who is seen having an underwater breath-holding competition with friends, a plot device that immediately establishes his strength and sets him apart from Keoua.
When he returns to Ka'u District and meets the dying King of Hawaii, Kalani’ōpu’u, he establishes himself as a wiser and more fit ruler than his cousin Keoua.
Kamehameha's return to the Ka'u District sets in motion the events of the prophecy, and Moku, the father of Ka'ahumanu, eventually betroths his daughter to young Kamehameha. Ka'ahumanu is unhappy with this union because the prophetess revealed that she would not be able to bear any heir to her future husband, thus making her one of the many wives that Kamehameha would take in the future.
However, Moku is adamant about marrying Ka'ahumanu to Kamehameha as he believes that his daughter would help him become the great king according to the prophecy. As Chief of War Episode 3 revealed, Moku was present at the birth of Kamehameha, which was also the night the prophesied comet appeared in the sky.
While many people believed that the comet was symbolic of the rise of Hawaii's future king, Moku believes that it symbolised the birth of the future King, ie, Kamehameha.
Chief of War is heading towards a power struggle between Kamehameha and Keoua
While Kamehameha is the prophesied king (who eventually became the first ruler of Hawaii) in Chief of War, Episode 3 established the main power struggle between him and Keoua. With Keoua set to legally inherit the throne after Kalani’ōpu’u's death, Moku's plans and the comet's prophecy will certainly hold no regard to him. Episode 3 hinted that both cousins will be pitted against each other, and Keoua is certainly one of the biggest obstacles in Kamehameha's way of becoming the King.
In addition, Keoua has also strategised a plan which involves a glorious war with Kahekili in the sands, following which he will bask in victory and rule Hawaii.
However, even in his Chief of War introduction, Kamehameha shines as the more worthy and befitting leader who suggested that their foremost priority should be to establish an adequate food supply and ensure that the kingdom has enough food if they go into war. His strategy keeps the kingdom's survival on top, which is the primary duty of a king, and he even impresses Kalani’ōpu’u.
