Ahead of the Murderbot Season 1 finale episode, one burning question has fans on edge: Will Murderbot Season 2 happen or not? As per the latest updates, Murderbot has not been renewed for a second season yet.
Apple TV+'s sci-fi action series Murderbot Season 1 starring Alexander Skarsgård and Noma Dumezweni premiered on May 16, 2025, and created a steady buzz among its viewers.
Created by the Weitz brothers (Paul and Chris), this series delves into the life of a self-aware rogue security unit, a cyborg who hacks itself to gain freedom. He pretends to follow orders to avoid getting caught, whereas, in reality, he wants to relax and binge-watch shows. However, when a routine mission goes wrong, it has to protect a group of humans. Along the way, it starts to learn more about itself. Murderbot is set on a journey it never signed up for, it doesn't want to care, maybe it does.
So if you love a good sci-fi series with a hint of character-driven plotlines, action, and mystery, Murderbot is a perfect pick to binge-watch this weekend.
Will Murderbot Season 2 happen?
The fate of Murderbot Season 2 has not been decided yet. Even though Murderbot Season 2 has not been officially announced, there's a strong possibility that the sci-fi series will be back with a second installment. The show has been able to garner positive reviews- it boasts a rating of 7.3 stars out of 10 on IMDb. Additionally, it also has a 96% critics score and a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Since its debut, the series has made its spot on Apple TV+'s Top 10 list along with the sports dramedy Stick and thriller Echo Valley.
Additionally, Apple TV+ does quite well with sci-fi series (Silo, Severance, Foundation) and tends to renew those. For instance, Foundation Season 3 is all set to release on July 11, 2025, and the popular Sci-fi thriller, Severance starring Adam Scott, has been renewed for a third installment. Thus, it's only a matter of time before Murderbot Season 2 gets officially announced.
Additionally, since the series is based on Martha Wells ' award-winning sci-fi book series The Murderbot Diaries, the showrunners know where the story can go next. With its rich source and clear direction, bringing Murderbot Season 2 to life should be a smooth sail.
Showrunners Paul and Chris Weitz on Murderbot Season 2
In an interview with NPN (Nexus Point News), showrunners- Weitz brothers revealed which book from The Murderbot Diaries they would like to adapt for the Murderbot Season 2 (if there was any). Although not directly, Paul teased that Murderbot Season 2 might happen, but that would take some time, and before they renewed it, they would like to talk to Martha Wells. He told,
"We don't want to jinx it. We're a long distance between getting to do this and then getting to do another season even. We would talk with Martha Wells, we might end up using shuffling the deck a little bit, using some stuff from, say, the 3rd or 4th book with stuff from the second book, but we don't know yet."
Chris Weitz further added,
"I think the second book for people who are familiar with the series doesn't really have the same team members, and I think it would be sad if we didn't have some element of that. It's not likely to be a book for book. It was just a really good thing to have the first book. The ending of the first book meant a lot to us, so that felt like the ending of our first series if we get a second series."
In an interview with io9 (via Gizmodo), when the showrunners were asked about whether they are eager to adopt more of Wells' books, Paul said,
"We would love to adapt more of them. We love that there's a real ending to the first season, but also that the ending is the beginning of something for Murderbot (as a character)."
