John Cena's Christopher Smith/Peacemaker will return to our screens in August this year. The first teaser of the show's second season was released on May 9, 2025, and almost a mo
nth later, on June 1, 2025, a BTS sizzle reel from the filming of the second season was shown at the CCXP Mexico panel. The same footage was released online.
This new BTS footage begins with Frank Grillo hinting at a brutal fight scene between his Rick Flag Sr. and Cena's Christopher Smith. Introduced in the animated series Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. will serve as the central antagonist of Peacemaker Season 2, who is seeking to settle scores with Chris for murdering his son. This is why fans are wondering if Chris will die in the second season, making it the last season of the HBO series.
To be honest, for now can't say for sure because Peacemaker Season 2 is still two months away. Therefore, we can't say for sure. However, even if Christopher were to survive the events of this season, Flag Sr. might be one of his toughest challenges yet.
Who is Peacemaker Season 2's Rick Flag Sr.?
As stated before, we meet Rick Flag Sr. for the very first time in Creature Commandos as the leader of the Task Force M (Monster). He immediately forms a physically intimate relationship with Princess Ilana Rostovic, whom he and his task force are protecting. However, this relationship is revealed to be just a manipulation tactic by Ilana, who is revealed to be the central villain of the animated show.
This experience would've made Rick Flag Sr. a more bitter man in Superman than he was at the beginning of Creature Commandos. At the beginning of the animated series, Flag Sr. reveals that he is still mourning his son Rick Flag Jr., who was killed by Peacemaker in 2021's The Suicide Squad. The Season 2 teaser reveals that Flag Sr. is aware of Christopher's role in his son's death.
This is why he has been secretly tracking Peacemaker ever since he became the director of A.R.G.U.S. One may wonder why not go after Chris immediately after becoming A.R.G.U.S.'s director. Probably because Flag Sr. wants to not just kill Chris but destroy him slowly and then deliver the killing blow. In the February 2025 press event, James Gunn explained the role of Flag Sr. in this season:
"You take the character of Rick Flag [Sr.], who starts out in Creature Commandos as one character, goes to Superman, continues to evolve and change, and then he starts out as a protagonist of one show and ends up as basically the antagonist of Season 2."
Looks like the upcoming season of the DC HBO series will be dramatically rich.
What is Season 2 about?
The eight-episode second season will follow Chris trying to join the Justice Gang, which is supposedly financially supported by Maxwell Lord and consists of two heroes: Guy Gardner's Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. Based on the teaser above, it seems that this season will follow Chris and his fellow team members' attempts to be taken seriously.
