CBS has now officially confirmed that Poppa's House won't be returning for a second season. According to a Deadline report, Poppa's House has been cancelled by the network in favour of other shows.
The report further states that Poppa's House was competing with three other shows for a thirty-minute spot on CBS and didn't make the cut. Despite delivering an impressive first season, fans of the show are now faced with the prospect of bidding the Damon Wayans-led comedy farewell.
Here's everything that we know about the show's cancellation.
What's the latest buzz about Poppa's House being cancelled?
The debut season of Poppa's House performed considerably well on CBS and generated substantial viewership. However, the show's second season was competing with three other half-hour comedy pilots. The first of these was DMV, with the second and third being Zarna and The Neighborhood spin-off.
As the network shortlisted the entries, the final contest was between DMV, Poppa's House, and Zarna. DMV finally emerged as the winner of the slot and will be featuring as the new half-hour comedy on CBS's 2025-2026 roster.
While Poppa's House was given a second season order with five additional episodes in November last year, its ratings fell below the other shows it was competing with for the requisite slot. The powers-that-be at CBS made a last-ditch attempt to incorporate the show by asking the showrunners to reduce their production budget, which was significant owing to the high-ranking talent performing on the show.
Damon Wayans speaks about the CBS show
The show featured an incredible camaraderie between the two leading characters and the father-son duo Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. During the Television Critics Association's summertime tour last year, both the father-son duo and showrunner Dean Lorey opened up about the show in an interview with TheWrap. Speaking about the impeccable chemistry he shares with his son, Wayans remarked:
"The chemistry is very helpful. That’s something that you can’t write. We have this comedic relationship from all these years as well as the father-son dynamic."
Wayans Jr. further added:
"When we’re around each other, that’s all we do. It’s to the point where it irritates my wife. She’s like, ‘Guys, go in the other room,’. We just laugh, and we just try and make each other laugh, and I feel like we bring that into these characters. Even though they’re different from who we are, also pieces of them are us.”
Lorey commented in a similar vein:
"To me, it was just a question of honoring their real life and their way with each other. You almost have to clear things out of their path and let them be themselves because that’s the fun of the show. We like the idea of getting the two of them together as much as we can, so it was just working backwards from that, you can immediately feel where to go with a scene or where to go with an episode just by the two of them playing together. That really formed it.”
