Dept. Q was one of those crime dramas that caught everyone by surprise. It was dark, thrilling, and full of emotionally charged moments. But here’s the big question: Will there be a Season 2? Netflix hasn’t said yes or no just yet, and fans are stuck in suspense.
Dept. Q follows Detective Carl Mørck, a man haunted by past trauma, who is pushed into leading a basement-based cold case unit. What sounds like a demotion turns into a gripping ride, as he and his mismatched team dig up long-forgotten crimes that are not yet forgiven.
Carl Mørck is played with a striking blend of pain and grit. His partner Assad adds warmth and balance, while Rose rounds out the team with a certain spark and unpredictability. Together, they’re a chaotic but effective force.
Though the original Danish setting was Copenhagen, the Netflix adaptation relocated the action to Edinburgh. Odd, right? But it somehow worked, giving the show a fresh, moody charm.
The origin of Dept. Q – a show based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s books
Jussi is a Danish author known for his gripping crime novels. Dept. Q is his most famous creation and has a huge following worldwide.
There are 10 books in the series. Season 1 only adapted the first one, titled Mercy. That means we still have nine potential seasons left!
Apart from the change in location, the show also added a slightly different tone. The gritty realism remained, but the characters felt more emotionally layered for TV audiences.
Some popular ones include Disgrace, Redemption, Guilt, and The Scarpetta. Each one dives deeper into Carl’s past and more twisted cold cases.
If Season 2 goes into production, it’ll probably adapt Disgrace, which deals with a brutal boarding school cover-up. Expect darker secrets, more emotional trauma, and even deeper mysteries.
While official critic scores are still rolling in, audience feedback has been super positive, especially praising the cast and direction.
Netflix looks at a show’s performance within the first 28 days. If not enough people finish the season quickly, it might not look good on paper, even if reviews are positive. Some shows get renewed in a week. Others take 3–6 months. We’re still within that waiting window for Dept. Q.
Some of the writers have hinted they’d love to keep going if Netflix gives the green light. Post-production took time due to the dark themes and moody palette. This might also delay planning for another season.
High-quality crime thrillers are expensive to produce as money is needed for proper sets, editing, as well as for the actors. Budget constraints could slow things down.
If renewed now, shooting could start late 2025, with a release in mid or late 2026. Don’t hold your breath for this year. But next year? Maybe.
There’s definitely hope for a second season. The show has great source material and a solid fanbase. It just needs a little push. So don’t give up yet!
Dept. Q has all the ingredients of a hit series: brilliant characters, gripping mysteries, and emotional depth. The first season impressed both new viewers and fans of the books.
While Netflix hasn't confirmed a second season yet, the signs are promising. With solid ratings and strong fan support, it’s only a matter of time before the show is renewed. Until then, let’s keep our fingers crossed and maybe reread the books to ease the wait.
