Amazon Prime Video's black comedy crime drama series, Sneaky Pete, starring Giovanni Ribisi and Margo Martindale, debuted with its pilot episode in 2015.

However, after co-creator David Shore left the series in 2016, he was replaced by Graham Yost, after which Season 1 was finally released in 2017. Soon after its premiere, it was renewed for a second season, which dropped in 2018. Meanwhile, the third season was released on May 10, 2019. Unfortunately, after three successful seasons, Amazon canceled Sneaky Pete in June 2019.

When Sneaky Pete was released on Amazon Prime Video, it hit like a well-played bluff: clever, stylish, and addictive. Within three seasons, the show had achieved critical acclaim, garnered positive reviews, and built a loyal fanbase.

The synopsis of the series reads,

"A con man on the run from a vicious gangster takes cover by assuming the identity of his prison cellmate Pete, and reuniting with Pete's estranged family, which threatens to drag him into a world just as dangerous as the one he's escaping."

So what went wrong? Let's break it down

Will there be Sneaky Pete Season 4?

No, there will not be Sneaky Pete Season 4. In June 2019, Amazon confirmed that Sneaky Pete would not return for a fourth season. There was no grand sendoff, no finale marketed as the end. Just a quiet cancellation that left the loyal fan base quite confused.

Even though the series wrapped up certain storylines, the finale also opened up doors to new cons, identities, and problems. Unfortunately, those will remain unsolved as of now.

What went wrong?

There wasn't an obvious reason for the cancellation of Sneaky Pete. The show had garnered solid reviews. Even after a decade, it features 8 stars out of 10 on IMDb and has a critics' score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It wasn't the acting either. Giovanni Ribisi owned the role of Marius/Pete. Margo Martindale, Marin Ireland, and Peter Gerety brought heart. The cons were clever. The tension? Always tight. But behind the scenes, things shifted.

Showrunner Graham Yost left after Season 2. And when Blake Master took over for Season 3, the tone shifted. Also, Amazon's priorities changed. They went big after 2019, especially post-pandemic, when they produced shows like The Boys, Reacher, and Lord of the Rings. Sneaky Pete didn't fit the criteria of the blockbuster model.

Then there were the numbers. While Amazon doesn't release detailed streaming data, reports suggested that despite being its second-most-watched original content in 2017, Sneaky Pete wasn't a money maker. The move from New York to California for a $9.2 million tax credit may have helped Season 3 survive, but it couldn't secure Season 4.

Could it come back?

Never say never. However, for now, Sneaky Pete is shelved for good, and there's no buzz about a reboot, spin-off, or a follow-up movie. The cast has also moved on and bagged multiple projects. For instance, after the cancellation of the series, Ribisi starred in popular projects including On the Verge, The Offer, and Avatar: The Way of Water, to name a few.

For fans still hoping, it's time to accept the hard truth: Sneaky Pete ain't coming back. No cliffhanger rescue, no surprise epilogue, just a clean exit. Maybe that's exactly how Marius would've wanted it.
