Out of 12, 6 episodes of Andor Season 2 are already available to stream on Disney+. We know that this season will feature one of Cassian Andor's most important supporting characters, the droid K-2SO, whom we first met in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Actor Alan Tudyk, who we recently heard in Creature Commandos as Dr. Phosphorus, is returning to voice the droid.
As stated above, K-2SO was introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as an Imperial security droid reprogrammed to fight for the good guys. In the 2016 movie, he serves as Cassian's co-pilot. This season of the prequel series is set to reveal K-2SO's origin tale, but for now, we don't know the episode of Andor Season 2 in which he will appear for the first time.
K-2SO's return in Andor Season 2 explained:
Alan Tudyk's return in Andor Season 2 was teased by Tony Gilroy in a Collider interview with Steve Weintraub in November 2022, following the release of the Season 1 finale. Weintraub asked the showrunner if Tudyk's K-2SO would be part of the then-upcoming season. To this, Gilroy responded:
"Well, I think that's one of the responsibilities of Part 2. Obviously, if we're going to walk into Rogue, we have to deal with that."
Thus, it wasn't surprising that Tudyk is returning to voice the reprogrammed Imperial droid in the final season of this prequel series. Alan Tudyk, who attended the 2025 Star Wars Celebration in Japan last week, spoke about his return as K-2SO in Andor Season 2. The actor shared this with the attendees:
"I always held out hope. [K2 is] such an important part of the show. I really wanted it to happen, I did for a time hold out for my own spin-off, K2 Fast K2 Furious… Tony's a better writer, it turns out. And he has made an amazing show, and we get to see how our two characters meet. And the birth of K-2SO will be seen this season, which is exciting to see. Very exciting to do, to be born."
Diego Luna, who was also present at the panel, expressed his happiness at Tudyk's return:
"I missed Alan badly. Seven very tough years, man. I was laughing the moment I saw him back in his very tight [costume]… I saw everything was in the extract same place after seven years."
Luna further continued:
"He's just like the most generous, nicest partner you can have in a scene. It's very difficult, there is nothing like working with someone that is always finding a way to make it more interesting, more fun, and to surprise you. And as an actor, that's beautiful. I never knew it was going to be so much fun. Because when you read the pages, you're interacting with a droid, no? But then Alan comes, and it's just a character that has shape, that has soul. He brought a soul to this character and made it unforgettable, and that's why he deserves the reception that he's got, because he took the character to another level."
Thus, it appears that Andor Season 2 will bring back K-2SO and Cassian's beloved bromance from Rogue One. However, it should be noted that the droid will return either on the upcoming Tuesday or the week after that, when the final three episodes will be released. Tony Gilroy, who was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, explained why K-2SO doesn't have much screen time.
Tony Gilroy K-2SO's limited screentime in Andor Season 2:
In the Hollywood Reporter interview published on April 29, 2025, Gilroy justified limited screentime for K-2SO as a story-based decision:
“[Limiting] K-2SO came from the experience of making Rogue, to be honest with you. From the very beginning, that was one of the most difficult parts of the original conversation — how long I was going to have to delay [K-2SO]? Because what can you do with him? I don’t want people to go back and diagram Rogue, but just within that movie, there are two or three or four places where we are hiding him — where he has to stay on the ship or can’t go somewhere. He’s a really, really difficult piece of equipment to carry through a story. The limitations on him are huge. He’s a very visible, troublesome piece of story gear. So I knew intuitively how long I would have to wait to do it.”
Then, appreciating Tudyk, Gilroy added:
“[K-2SO] is fantastic and he’s funny. Tudyk is hysterical and it’s really great. We were like, ‘OK, we’re going to [have him in the show] and let’s make it spectacular and let’s really make a thing out of it.’ And that’s what we’ve tried to do.”
