We are barely over the finale of Stranger Things Season 5, and the fandom has already spiraled into detective mode with a brand new theory about the show's possible future. Even though Netflix and the Duffer Brothers have confirmed The Rightside Up as the show's last episode, a loud corner of the internet is convinced that there's more to the story. According to a popular conspiracy theory, there is a secret Episode 9 waiting to drop, and the finale we watched may not be as final as it seemed.

The theory rests on the idea that the final episode of Stranger Things Season 5 might have been an illusion created by Vecna. Many fans have talked about how several moments in the finale felt deliberately off. This includes the graduation students' weird hand stance where they all collectively had their hands on their laps, in a fashion very similar to Henry Creel's. On the other hand, Max Mayfield graduated high school, even though she was in a coma for such a long time.

Another detail is that many have pointed out that a faint sound of a heartbeat and a ticking clock can be heard after the screen cuts to black on the last episode. Also, several mentions of the Whatzit take place, cementing the theory among the fandom who still has hopes of its return.

The Duffers, however, have been very open about the show's conclusion and that the story is done with Stranger Things Season 5. In an interview with Variety, Matt Duffer stated,

“This is a complete story. It’s done.”

What happened in the finale of Stranger Things Season 5?

The final episode of Stranger Things Season 5 ends exactly where everything began: a Dungeons and Dragons table in a suburban basement.

After Vecna and the Mind Flayer are finally defeated and the Upside Down collapses for good, the Hawkins crew go on to live their different lives. Max, Lucas, Dustin, Will and Mike graduate; Nancy goes on to become a journalist after dropping out of college; Jonathon goes to NYU; Steve becomes a little leagues coach. Mike ends up becoming a writer, while Dustin is valedictorian. Lucas and Max stay together, going on that awaited movie date at last. Joyce and Hopper end up marrying, moving to Montauk together.

The battle that gets them there is the biggest the series has ever staged. Eleven, Kali, and Max confront Henry inside his own mind while Hopper and Murray set off the bomb that destroys the interdimensional bridge. On the ground, everyone plays a role. Flamethrowers, spears, rockets, and flares all come into play as the group takes down the Mind Flayer together. In the end Vecna dies at Joyce's hand, a deliberate choice, given that she was the one who first believed that things went wrong.

Eleven's fate is left ambiguous. We see her dying as she lets herself go with the Upside Down as the gate closes, but a later theory by Mike shows her up in an adventure, surrounded by waterfalls. It's a hopeful ending, one that has happiness for everyone.
