Supernatural was the show that gave Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki the recognition they deserved as actors. The show followed brothers Dean and Sam Winchester as they fought supernatural beings, including ghosts and demons.

The show aired on The WB in 2006 and then moved to CW. It ran for fifteen seasons till 2020. The show ended with both Dean and Sam dying, but fans are always hopeful for the show's return. While there's no confirmation on the status of a possible season sixteen, Jensen Ackles, who played Dean on the show, has revealed why it might not happen soon.

Jensen Ackles on why Supernatural isn't returning soon

Jensen Ackles' character might have died at the end of the show's fifteenth season, but he'd still be an integral part of the show if it returns for a sixteenth season. On the surface level, it doesn't make sense to bring back characters from the dead, but Eric Kripke will likely figure something out, as there can be no new season without Dean or Sam Winchester.

After Supernatural, Ackles has worked on various successful projects, including The Boys and Countdown, and is set to play a main role and serve as an executive producer on the upcoming The Boys spin-off, Vought Rising.

While it is great to see Ackles do well in other projects, fans are still hopeful about a potential season 16 of Supernatural. But it might not happen too soon. In an interview with Collide, Jensen Ackles revealed why the sixteenth season isn't happening yet. He said,

“Well, it sounds like Amazon’s going to have to come up with an idea on that one, because they’re controlling my schedule right now,”

All the shows Ackles is working on right now are by Amazon, for Prime Video. Thus, unless Prime frees up his schedule, Ackles cannot focus on a potential season sixteen of the show fans still love dearly. But it hasn't been taken off the table completely. Ackles also said,

“But look, we’ve talked about our love for the show. We continue to talk about it. We continue to do conventions and fan appearances and stuff, and talk about it. I feel like it’s one of those things where, if it happens, then let’s go.”

Ackles seems like he'll be ready to step into the shoes of Dean Winchester again if the opportunity arises, and that is surely hopeful news for fans. But he did make it clear that Supernatural isn't a project in focus right now; hence, it will not arrive anytime soon. He said,

“it’s not something that’s in the wings waiting right now.”
“Maybe sometime in the future,”

Jensen Ackles also did not fail to mention that while Amazon has him on a tight schedule, he is happy to be busy for now. He said,

“It would be fun to put those boots back on and get back in that car. But… right now, Amazon’s keeping me pretty busy. It’s a good problem to have.”

Supernatural is streaming on Prime Video.
