The Diplomat, which was first released on Netflix on 20th April 2023, became a success for its raw interpretation of diplomacy and power. Starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell as Kate and Hal Wyler, two seasons of The Diplomat are out till now, and a third season is coming to Netflix in the fall of 2025.
As fans eagerly wait for the third season, Netflix has announced that The Diplomat will also be returning for a fourth season.
About The Diplomat
If you have watched The Diplomat, you already know that the show offers a deep insight into a diplomat's life, responsibilities, and challenges. It shows what we all know, but often forget: Diplomats fight wars before they reach the battlefield. Before there can be any firing or attacks, diplomats neutralize the situation to save lives and governments.
The Diplomat's season one logline on Netflix reads,
"After a hostile attack on a British vessel, seasoned diplomat Kate Wyler assumes a new role in the UK that puts her skills - and marriage - to the test."
The Diplomat began with diplomat Kate Wyler being appointed as the ambassador of the United States to the United Kingdom, after a British naval ship was attacked, leading to the death of forty-one sailors. The first season follows Kate and the UK government trying to uncover who was behind the attack. We eventually find out that the UK Prime Minister, Trowbridge, was the one behind it.
Season one of The Diplomat also saw Kate and Hal struggling with their marriage, with Kate contemplating a divorce. But they still have each other's backs and support each other's careers. Kate is also being considered to be made the Vice President of the United States, which means she cannot divorce Hal.
Season two picks up where season one left off. As Debora Cahn, the creator of The Diplomat, told Tudum by Netflix,
“Season 1 ended with Kate’s (Keri Russell) realization that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the UK wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister,”
Cahn continues,
“Now she has to prove it.”
“The US and the UK don’t spy on each other,”
“In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”
Season one ended with an explosion that left Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford and Hal Wyler critically injured. It also led to the death of embassy staffer Ronnie Buckhurst and British MP Merritt Grove.
In season two, Kate tries to prove that Trowbridge was behind the vessel attack, which leads to her finding out that US Vice President Grace Penn was also responsible for the attack. As Hal Wyler calls to inform the President of the United States about Grace's actions, President Rayburn has a heart attack and dies. Yes, that means Grace Penn is now President.
As season three's release is coming closer, one might wonder what it will bring. Well, for starters, things are going to be extremely difficult for Kate if she tries to prove that Grace Penn, the President of the United States guilty of the British naval ship attack. As Debora Cahn told Tudum by Netflix,
“Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell return as Kate and Hal Wyler for The Diplomat season three. Other cast members to return are David Gyasi as Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Rory Kinnear as President Nicole Trowbridge. Bradley Whitford will be joining the cast as Grace Penn's husband, Todd Penn.
The Diplomat season three arrives in the fall of 2025 on Netflix. No official date for season four has been announced, but stay tuned for future announcements.
