It's been only a few days since The Girlfriend, starring Olivia Cooke and Robin Wright, dropped its six episodes on Prime Video, but it has already made such a splash that people are hoping to see it return for another season.

The psychological thriller, based on Michelle Frances' eponymous book, centers around two women who are deeply attached to the same man. One of them is his girlfriend, while the other one is his mother. They fight with each other to stay close to him, mainly in a passive-aggressive way. So, even if it may not break any new ground, it makes up for a captivating camp thriller.

By the first season's climax, things take a violent turn, leading to the death of the mother, who was once determined to expose the lies of her son's girlfriend. In the final moments, the son realizes the truth about the woman he ends up staying with. However, the cliffhanger ending doesn't reveal the fate of their relationship.

It begs the question: Will The Girlfriend be renewed for a second season? Until now, Prime Video hasn't officially greenlit season two, but one of the producers seems open to the possibility of a future project. Robin Wright, who plays the mother, also spoke about how her character can interestingly return to the couple's life, despite her apparent death.

Let's see what they said about the show's future.

The first season of The Girlfriend followed Cherry (the girlfriend) and Laura (the mother) trying to one-up each other in their attempts to stay close to Daniel (the son). Cherry comes from a lower-class background, which makes Laura assume that she is in the relationship for Daniel's wealth. It becomes a breeding ground for jealousy, conspiracy, and pure spite.

By the end, Laura realizes Cherry's true intentions from her mother, but by then, Daniel switches sides and supports his girlfriend over his mother. As the two women try to take each other's lives, he intervenes and kills Laura himself. Despite a likely surprise about his decision to kill his own mother, Robin Wright considers it a rather obvious choice on his part. In line with this, she told Today.com,

"Initially, everybody thought, 'Well, this is going to be a no-brainer. Cherry kills Laura, then she wins. And I was like, 'No, let my baby kill me.'"

Speaking about a second season and her potential return, she said that it's possible since Daniel could have brought Laura back to life, even if we don't see it happen on screen:

"She [Laura] could still be alive. If he resuscitates her, that's not on camera."

Apart from her, producer Jonathan Cavendish addressed the show's cliffhanger ending and the potential for a second season. He said,

"If people want a second one... episode six has what I'd like to think is a pretty decent cliffhanger. — So, we originally thought 'No, we'll just make one'. Then, as we were going, we thought this is so good it would be a pity [to end it].

He also added,

"But it's great to not think about another season until you get to an end and you realise there's a logic to a cliffhanger. And, I promise you, it's a good one."

The Girlfriend is streaming on Prime Video.
