Created by Augusto Fraga, Turn of the Tide, is a Portuguese drama series featuring José Condessa, Helena Caldeira, Maria João Bastos, and others. The show is also known as Rabo de Peixe and premiered on Netflix in 2023.
The show is based on a true incident where in 2001, a sailboat called Sun Kiss 47 sank off the Azorean coast and had over 505 kilograms of highly pure cocaine. Creator Augusto Fraga talks about Turn of the Tide

According to an interview with O Jornal, creator of the show, Augusto Fraga, states that he “never imagined it would even be possible”, when talking about the sudden success of the show on an international level.
Fraga wrote the show along with Hugo Gonçalves and Tiago R. Santos and he was extremely happy when Netflix announced that the show would be renewed for a second and third season.
“We dreamed big, but what happened far exceeded our expectations. Seeing the series enter Netflix’s global Top 10 was surreal...” Fraga mentioned.
Further, the show had a strong impact upon him.
“It started out as a risky idea — telling a story from the Azores with global ambition — and ended up becoming a phenomenon much bigger than I could have imagined. It was an intense, emotional, and creative journey that redefined my relationship with cinema, with the Azores, and with myself as a director and writer. But the biggest impact was human. I met incredible people, with whom I hope to continue working with for many years to come.”
Ultimately, Fraga is especially happy that the story brought the spotlight on Azoreans and they were finally represented on an international level, along with bringing visibility to Portugal.
“We didn’t try to copy anything or please anyone. I think that helped...The series mixes drama, humor, crime, faith, love, and survival — all with an aesthetic and rhythm that reflect my personality as a director. And, of course...Azores as the main character,” Fraga noted.
