Within days of its release, Wayward has become a hot topic of discussion among the audience. With its mystery and intrigue, the show has achieved a huge fan following and also received critical acclaim.

The thriller series is set in the Tall Pines Academy, run by the enigmatic Evelyn Wade, where troubled teens are said to be shown the right path. However, a new local police officer, Alex Dempsey, senses something fishy and endeavors to uncover the dark secrets of the place.

The show features only eight episodes and ends with multiple questions. This has left the audience asking for more, and people are wondering whether there will be a Wayward Season 2. While the show has not been renewed by Netflix, the series creators are in favor of making a second season.

As of now, Wayward Season 2 has not been greenlit by Netflix. Even before its premiere, the show was labeled a limited series, which traditionally lasts just one season. However, the first season of the mystery thriller has ended in a way that has not resolved multiple subplots, and hence, audiences are asking for the show’s return with a second chapter.

In the past, there have been times when limited series have been turned into multi-season programs owing to their popularity. Some examples are Netflix’s Beef and FX’s Shōgun. Considering that Wayward is off to a great start on Netflix and is steadily rising throughout the streaming charts, the streamer might want to bankroll another season of the show.

Netflix could spend the next few days and weeks analyzing the performance of the series and eventually make a decision about its future. The first season took two years to be produced, and considering a similar timeline, the potential second season might come out in 2027.

What the series creator has said about Wayward Season 2

While the show awaits renewal, series creator Mae Martin is ready to delve into the world of Tall Pines again. In an interview with TV Insider, the creator and lead actor revealed that the show has the potential to be continued as there is more story to tell. Martin said:

“I was told it was a miniseries, but there’s definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically. Hopefully it’s tied up enough that it’s satisfying to watch as a series.”

The star cast is also eager to come back, as Toni Collette, Alyvia Alyn Lind, and Sydney Topliffe have all expressed their hopes of Wayward getting a second season. However, if the show does get renewed, some of the cast members would not return due to their characters’ deaths.

The actors whose characters made it out alive and are expected to reprise their roles in Season 2 include Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey, Sarah Gadon as Laura Redman, Sydney Topliffe as Abbie, and Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila.

Evelyn’s fate is left unclear, and hence, Toni Collette could also return. However, Gage Munroe and Brandon Jay McLaren would not come back as Riley and Dwayne Andrews, respectively, as their character arcs ended in the first season.

All episodes of Wayward Season 1 are streaming on Netflix.
