Marvel’s Wonder Man is not just another superhero with a cape and mask. It is part superhero action and part Hollywood satire. The eight-part miniseries is set to debut on Disney+ in early 2026. It is based on the story of a struggling actor, Simon Williams, in need of a boost, but unfortunately, he's someone who has to balance auditions, fame, and superpowers of his own.

What makes Wonder Man stand out is its tone. The show is not a traditional origin story; instead, it plays with meta humor, mocks the entertainment industry, and centers on character-driven comedy. Imagine She-Hulk self-awareness but with even more cutting insults and backstage Hollywood insanity.

Featuring a cast of both old and new characters, the show is already becoming one of the strangest experiments in the MCU, but also one of the most entertaining.

The two outstanding performers in Wonder Man define the tone of the show. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays the role of a young, charismatic, and struggling actor, Simon Williams, and his life begins to change when he is hired for a Wonder Man film, and discovers that he has real superpowers. Abdul-Mateen balances confidence with vulnerability as Simon attempts to pursue fame while managing his new powers.

Against him, there stands Sir Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, a washed-out, weird actor that fans will remember from his fake Mandarin years in the MCU. In Wonder Man, Trevor becomes a kind of mentor as well as a companion to Simon, providing a lot of laughs, mixed with some unexpected emotional depth.

Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley are also a very natural duo together, which results in them being funny and heartfelt, as they both traverse the unfamiliar realm of Hollywood and superheroes.

The cast of Wonder Man is composed of a vibrant combination of familiar and thrilling new actors who add both complexity and a sense of humor to the show.

Arian Moayed is set to reappear as Agent Cleary, a government official who is also associated with the overall superhero management of the MCU, a fun reference to any long-time fan. Zlatko Burić stars as Von Kovak, the over-the-top filmmaker who is doing that crass Hollywood redo of the in-universe Wonder Man movie, playing it big and loud.

Demetrius Grosse plays the role of Eric “Grim Reaper” Williams (brother to Simon), who is a former comic-book villain, giving the story a more emotional twist. Ed Harris is rumored to play Neal Saroyan, an agent to Simon, who adds some intensity to the back story drama of the show.

Still-undisclosed roles and performances of actors like X Mayo, Olivia Thirlby, and Byron Bowers bring additional mystery to the series. Collectively, this supporting cast makes the series sound unpredictable and fun, with a great mix of comedy, drama, and traditional MCU flair.

The crew behind the scenes

There is a very savvy creative team working on delivering a new and interesting tone. Wonder Man is co-developed by creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Cretton, who also worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as director, has significant directing experience, while Guest has background experience in the comedic genre from working on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community.

Marvel experts Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Jonathan Schwartz, and Brad Winderbaum are executive producers, ensuring that the show stays connected to the world of the MCU. The writers' room, Paul Welsh, Madeline Walter, Zeke Nicholson, Anayat Fakhraie, Roja Gashtili & Julia Lerman, and Kira Talise, strike a balance between comedy, emotions, and superhero elements.

The directing duties for these episodes are shared by Cretton, James Ponsoldt, Tiffany Johnson, and Stella Meghie, and these credits bring a lot of variety to the directing style in the show. Together, the group brings elements of both Marvel spectacle and comedy to tell Simon Williams’ Hollywood experience.
