During an interview with Us Weekly, Sweet Magnolias’ JoAnna Garcia Swisher answered a fan-generated question nobody expected to receive an answer to. Pressed as to whether she could once more work with her Reba co-star-turned-friend Steve Howey—now, however, on Sweet Magnolias—her reply was promptly enthusiastic.
As per Us Weekly, she said,
"Um, yes and yes, like all of the things, um, I would jump at the chance to work with Steve again. We have talked about it, you know, he is just, I have so much love for him and we have obviously just this really special, unique chemistry that is just rare and I think he's so wildly talented"
She added,
"And he made me look good for so many years just to be his partner in crime on that show and he was just so inherently brilliant and funny, um, and so yes, the answer is 1000%. I don't know if it'll be Van and Cheyenne, but I can definitely say that there would, there, I will text him often."
That concise but adamant reply has since had the show’s fans and veteran Reba viewers speculating in favor of a reunion, especially in the quaint, small-town world of Serenity.
It’s the sort of offhand comment that germinates rumors. Sweet Magnolias is a three-season Netflix hit, and even the rumor of Steve Howey’s guest appearance, long or short, is a sparkplug of fan curiosity.
JoAnna Garcia and Steve Howey: A history that rings true
Garcia and Howey began together in Reba, the six-season sitcom which ran from 2001 until 2007. Garcia played Cheyenne Montgomery, Reba McEntire's daughter, and Howey played Van Montgomery, her high school boyfriend who ended up being her husband. The two were center and core of the show's comedy and had their chemistry on screen translate into making their subplot one of the show's best attractions.
Since Reba concluded years ago, both actors have had varied roles. Garcia recently appeared on TV for Sweet Magnolias, while Howey appeared on Shameless and is now on True Lies. Fans never gave up hope that they would once again appear together on screen, and Garcia's latest comment kindled hopes.
No confirmations, only true appreciation
Garcia's quote aside, no confirmations or announcements of any sort have been made regarding Steve Howey's return in any future season of Sweet Magnolias. No announcements from showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson or the crew on casting updates or guest stars about Howey have been made.
Garcia's comment is indicative of her excitement and admiration for Howey's talent and their previous collaboration. She never indicated that negotiations were ongoing for a cameo.
Sweet Magnolias stays true to its roots
Throughout the three seasons of its run, Sweet Magnolias has been fairly faithful to its ensemble cast and the intertwined lives of the characters within Serenity. The show has developed a pattern that depends upon tone consistency and character-based storytelling.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher's reply that she would like to work with Steve Howey once more on Sweet Magnolias was warm and personal. It was not a tease or a spoiler but a testament to real affection for a good friend and past co-star.
No arrangements are planned in the interim to have Steve Howey join Serenity. As Sweet Magnolias continues, however, its fate is entirely at the whim of its creators. In the meantime, Garcia's comment is simply an instance of well-meaning nostalgia.
