Yellowjackets premiered in 2021, and upon its release, it received praise from both critics and audiences. Telling the story of a bunch of high school soccer players who survived a plane crash in the wilderness of Ontario, Yellowjackets made its mark with its theme of cannibalism and how far people would go to survive.

The story, being told in two timelines, showed how the girls survived the crash by violent means and then it also showed how they are doing in the present time, with families of their own.

One of the key turning points in the Showtime series came at the end of season 1 with Jackie’s death who was shown to be frozen to death because of sleeping outside in the snow.

Jackie met an unfortunate end in Yellowjackets

While Jackie was the leader of the group, when the girls got stuck in the wilderness, she failed to adapt to the new norms and changing modes of survival. Jackie was more of a fancy girl who was used to her life back in the city. However, remaining alive in the wilderness required a certain kind of strength and brutality that Jackie did not have in her.

Moreover, despite her and Shauna being best friends, they were already having tensions between them, and getting stuck in the wilderness further escalated things as Jackie grew increasingly disapproving of the ways that the group was dealing with things.

Eventually, a huge fight broke out between Shauna and Jackie, and the group took the former’s side, which made Jackie feel even more isolated, and she decided to stay out for the night.

It was undoubtedly a wrong decision given how cold it was. Moreover, Jackie did not have the skills to light herself a proper fire that would keep her warm. As a result, the group discovered the next day that Jackie had frozen to death.

This essentially shattered Shauna as she was her best friend and she also held herself accountable for the fact that Jackie had spent the night outside.

However, Jackie’s death was not the most shocking arc of her character. Yellowjackets Season 2 saw the girls devouring her dead body and it was with her death that the show established the theme of cannibalism.

Jackie’s death moved the show to a much darker side and it was shown how the girls would go to any length for survival. It was not that the girls did not love or respect Jackie, but in the cold and with a severe lack of food, wasting her body seemed like a luxury that they could not afford, leading them to eat their own team member.
