Yellowstone recently came to a celebrated end with the conclusion of its fifth season. However, the original Yellowstone might have reached its conclusion. There are a host of other Yellowstone prequels that have either been released or are currently in different stages of production.

From 1883 to 1923, the Yellowstone universe gradually branched out into different directions, partly owing to its popularity and partly due to the brilliance of creator Taylor Sheridan in creating a shared and engaging narrative universe.

As of now, there are a combined total of six prequels and spin-offs that belong in the Yellowstone universe. Here's everything that we know about them.

Yellowstone prequel and spin-off details revealed

Keep reading to learn more about the various prequels and spin-off shows in the Yellowstone universe.

1) 1883

1883 debuted in 2021 on Paramount+ and featured the origin story of the Dutton family. The first season of the prequel portrayed the long and arduous march that the Dutton family undertook from Tenessee to Montana. During the march, Elsa Dutton, the daughter of John Dutton succumbed to her injuries sustained from a poisoned arrow.

As a result, John Dutton buried her in the Yellowstone Valley and settled down therein, after procuring the land from the Native American community. Elsa Dutton went on to be a narrative bridge between 1883 and the final episode of Yellowstone Season 5B.

2) 1923

1923 is the second prequel that saw the Dutton family members, this time portrayed by stalwarts Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, navigating a period of crisis during Prohibition and the Great Depression. Taylor Sheridan justified his decision to take up the tale of the Dutton family from the year 1923 when he explained:

"I chose that moment in time to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton.”

The second season of 1923 will premiere on February 23, 2025.

3) 1944

There is little information available about 1944, except the fact that one season of this show was greenlit back in 2023. However, there hasn't been any recent news about the development or potential release date. Speaking in an interview with TV Insider, executive producer and director Christina Voros mentioned:

"I honestly don’t know how Taylor chooses to tell which stories he chooses to tell when. I think he has closed a lot of doors on Yellowstone this season. There are obviously characters that we will not see again because they have been dispatched. But I think he has left some doors open, and there’s some doors that I can’t tell if they’re locked or not yet. But we will know when we cross through them."

4) The Madison

Previously titled 2024, The Madison was announced in conjunction with 1944 in 2023. This show had been planned to serve as the first-ever sequel to the flagship show. The creators have described this show as a heartfelt drama that chronicles the highs and lows of a New York Family living in the Madison River valley of central Montana. According to the latest reports, Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer has been included in the cast, alongside Patrick J. Adams and Matthew Fox.

5) 6666

First announced in February 2021, 6666 was supposed to be another spin-off that would feature the actual 6666 ranch in Texas. However, recent reports suggest that the show has been put on hold following the rise of complications regarding Taylor Sheridan's plans to purchase the ranch.

Sheridan said to The Hollywood Reporter in 2023:

"That, for a number of reasons, needs a unique level of special care because this is a real place with real families working here. You have to respect the lineage. I’ve told (the studio) to be patient."

6) Untitled Rip and Beth Wheeler Spinoff

This was greenlit as a spin-off that would revolve around the two pivotal characters of Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, played by Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly respectively. According to reports, production of this spin-off is underway. A release date, however, has yet to be announced.
