Played by Ian Somerhalder, Boone Carlyle is one of the characters on the hit show from the early aughts, Lost. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, Lost is one of the most famous shows from the last two decades.

The mystery and drama show aired for six seasons from 2004 to 2010 and chronicled the lives of a group of people travelling from Sydney to Los Angeles on a flight that crash-lands on a mysterious island.

Lost featured many flashbacks and flash-forwards, covering the personal lives of the survivors. The series was a critical and commercial hit and won several awards. However, later seasons of the show also suffered from criticism as the series delved into the supernatural and had several convoluted plots.

As the show had a huge ensemble cast, Ian Somerhalder was also one of the actors who played a significant role in the show. His character, Boone, first appeared in the pilot episode and is the stepbrother of another survivor, Shannon Rutherford.

Boone, played by Ian Somerhalder, makes an entry during the pilot episode of the show. The character was the son of the rich Sabrina Carlyle, and his mother married Adam Rutherford, who has a daughter called Shannon. Before the crash, Boone was the chief operating officer of his mother’s business in New York City. His relationship with Shannon becomes complicated as he becomes attracted to her.

Boone regularly tries to rescue Shannon from abusive boyfriends. However, Boone also learns that Shannon's relationships were actually a scam to get Boone’s attention and money. Even though he is hurt, Boone and Shannon get intimate, and the two board the doomed Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles, which makes them two of the survivors on the island.

Once he is on the island, Ian Somerhalder’s Boone stays protective of Shannon but also becomes an apprentice of John Locke, who is a castaway. Over the course of the show, the two discover various things on the island, and their dynamic becomes layered. In Season 1 Episode 20, titled “Do No Harm,” Boone finds a working radio in the cockpit of a small plane on a cliffside and transmits a distress signal. Unfortunately, the aircraft fell on the ground. This leads to Boone suffering from serious injuries, and even after Jack attempts to save him, Boone dies.

Boone also appears in Lost when Locke has a hallucination, and the show focuses on an alternate timeline. Finally, Boone appears in the finale episode of the show, “The End,” where he brings together Shannon and Sayid and conspires with Hurley to get them together. Boone also meets Jack when they get together to move on to the afterlife.

Before Ian Somerhalder became a household name for his role in The Vampire Diaries, he played the character of Boone on Lost. Even though the actor had a short appearance on the show, he has always been grateful for the part.

Boone was one of the first main characters on the show to die, and it was also a big break for Ian Somerhalder. In an interview with People, the actor agrees that he has “enormous gratitude” for the characters he played on Lost and The Vampire Diaries, as the show enabled him to reach a wider audience.

Boone’s death had a ripple effect, impacting both Jack and Locke’s characters, and the tension between them heightened. Further, Shannon’s character was also revived as she tried to become a better person.

Even though Boone’s death was tragic, it helped the show build the idea that no one was safe on Lost, and many central characters died over the course of the next few seasons. However, Boone’s death is still remembered today, and Ian Somerhalder’s fans especially feel the pain.
