It is more than three decades since Chris Carter's The X Files premiered, with FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully finding themselves investigating a host of paranormal encounters, from alien abductions to government conspiracies. Since its premiere in 1993, the science fiction series has grown to become one of the most revisited classics.

However, even though it can be found on multiple streaming networks, most of them require a paid subscription to watch the sci-fi classic. Whether you are returning to the world of paranormal investigations and government conspiracies or if it is your first time wandering into this classic realm, The X-Files has something for everybody. Throughout the nine full seasons, two feature films, and two limited-run seasons, the sci-fi show has managed to build an exceptional fanbase, transitioning from its niche to a cultural phenomenon.

Now, The X Files will officially be available to stream free of any cost through Pluto TV's services. The streamer announced recently that all eleven seasons of the classic sci-fi (218 episodes in total) will officially be available to stream on demand from January 1, 2026.

Additionally, the show is also set to receive its very own linear channel, which will kick off on January 1, 2026, and run 24/7. The linear channel is set to take up a chronological broadcast of the sci-fi, and once all 218 episodes have been broadcast, it will shift to marathon episodes of particular arcs or threats that the duo faces. So, Pluto TV is set to shine an epic spotlight on The X Files, its complicated narratives and intricate mythology in an unforgettable journey for all sci-fi lovers.

Through the original nine-season run, The X Files is a unique blend of Monster of the Week arcs and an overarching season-long story arc, which brought back appearances from William B. Davis as the well-known "Cigarette Smoking Man."

Bypassing the gender stereotypes, we met Fox "Spooky" Mulder, played by David Duchovny, the FBI special agent, and a believer in all things paranormal and extraterrestrial. He is paired with Dana Scully, the science-based skeptic played by Gillian Anderson, who completed the age-old duo of faith and skepticism. Throughout the run of the show, the characters developed and questioned their internal faith and skepticism.

This sci-fi show is also where the currently reigning sci-fi master Vince Gilligan (creator of Pluribus, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul) got his first start in the industry. His first writing job was in an episode for Season 2, after which he went on to earn a staff position, and his later collaborations included the iconic Bryan Cranston. Thus, in a way, The X Files gave birth to the widely acclaimed Breaking Bad.
