In Chief of War Episode 5, when Ka'iana returned to the Hawaiian Islands after he acquired ammunition from Tamboanga Island, everyone was shocked as well as happy to see him alive. His wife, Kupouhi; her sister, Heke; and his half-brothers, Nahi and Namake, ran through the beach and hugged him tightly. They reunited months after being separated during the chase. Ka'humanu saved Ka'iana's family, and they sailed for Hawaii; on the other hand, Ka'iana jumped off a cliff and was rescued by a British boat.

When Ka'iana didn't show up for months, his family thought he was dead. Apple TV+'s historical fiction Chief of War is not just about battles and betrayals; it also portrays raw emotions. For instance, Namake's mixed emotions upon Ka'iana's return are hard to ignore. When Ka'iana returns, he excuses himself from the reunion and offers prayers to their God in honor of Ka'iana's safe return. This suggests that he is truly glad to see his brother back, even though he's still fighting his emotions.

Turns out even Nahe is aware of their bond; he tells Kupouhi,

"You are not here for Ka'iana. You seek Namake. Let him go.

He continues,

"Namake will find his balance; he always does. Nut keeping this flame alive will not help him. It will destroy him. Our prayers have been answered Kupouhi. Ka'iana has returned. He needs us now."

Kupouhi listens to Nahe's advice and speaks with Ka'iana. Later, as they make love in their hut, we see Namake heading towards the ocean. He removes the necklace (a symbol of their love) and throws it off. Bare-bodied, he takes a few dips in the ocean. It almost feels as if he is cleansing his mind and heart. He then greets the rising sun with a song,

"A new awakening. The sun is in the east. From the ocean, the ocean deep. Climbing the heavens, the highest heavens. In the east, there is the sun. A new awakening."

The dip in the ocean and the song signify that he has gotten rid of his feelings for Kupouhi and is ready for a fresh start. But are emotions so easily washed away by the waves? Does Namake not feel anything for Kupouhi now, or is it something else? How would Ka'iana react to this?
