You Season 5 turns the page: How Beck's book and Bronte bring Joe to justice
Joe Goldberg, after killing Guinevere Beck, published her book 'The Dark Face of Love' in the ending of You Season 1. She had written those pages under the captivity of Joe inside the glass cage. With all the saviour complex and twisted sense of self that Joe has, he thinks of it as a favour he did to Beck. He finds the book to be the final act of love between them. In Joe's words: "It was an apology, an act of love".
Joe had altered the book, taking away Beck's voice. He added his own words to manipulate the text. But as fate would have it, in You Season 5, it is revealed that Bronte, originally Louise, had closely known Beck in their university. Upon reading Beck's book, she doubts the incoherence in the written material.
One of the biggest clues that she found in the book is when Joe mentions Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, an author whom Beck was critical of, regarding Ibsen's stance about his work being called 'humanist', and not feminist. Hence, it was very unlikely for Beck to attribute the author in her work.
Bronte remembers an anecdote about her and Beck's interaction about this particular matter back in university. That is when it strikes her that Beck's voice has been manipulated. Bronte plots to avenge Beck's murder and to seek justice.
She gets together with a few friends she found on the internet who also have the same motive - to take down Joe. One of them includes Dr. Nicky's son, Clayton. Amidst all of this, Bronte suffers personal loss too, as her mother passes away after fighting cancer.
Bronte catfishes her way into Joe's life, and places herself at Mooney's, a space extremely personal to Joe. A space where Beck and Joe's story took place. In the due course, sparks fly between Joe and Bronte. Throughout the series, Bronte suffers a huge moral conflict as she gets diverted from her original mission by actually falling for Joe.
Towards the end of You Season 5, Bronte and Joe go to a secluded house as Joe wants to rebuild his life with a clean slate, post the fire incident at Mooney's. Bronte, who has been conflicted throughout regarding her stance about Joe, finally gets clarity and decides to bring Joe to justice.
She pretends to be in love with him and leads him to get intimate with her. As soon as she finds Joe swaying away in the moment of vulnerability and intimacy, she quickly pulls out a gun and points it at Joe. Finding Joe helpless and unarmed, Bronte gives Beck's book to him and asks him to edit out every part of the text that he had added and altered. This way Bronte restores Beck's voice and also the justice that was due.
Beck's original words get republished again with the efforts of Bronte. Joe Goldberg's erasure of Beck's voice is a classic example of patriarchal, misogynist forces that have been silencing women's voices and agency for centuries.
As Bronte rightfully calls out Joe, saying,
"It wasn't enough that you took her life, you had to take her f**king voice too?"
