When It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary crossed over earlier this year, the episode turned out to be a laugh riot. At the time, the Gang arrived at the underfunded school to volunteer after a court order.
Fortunately, the special event is not over yet as the two sitcoms are going to cross paths again in July, with the release of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 1.
Talking about the next part of the event, Kaitlin Olson, who stars in Always Sunny as Dee Reynolds, has revealed that the episode will cover the same events as the first part; this time told through the Gang’s perspective instead of the Abbott teachers. She said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight,
“Sunny, when we come back in July, you see our side of the crossover event. So what happened that week from our perspective. It’s the same exact week where they volunteered at Abbott Elementary, but it’s from the gang’s perspective.”
Kaitlin Olson talks about the second part of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary crossover
The first part of the crossover was aired on January 8, 2025, as Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 9, Volunteers. The episode was one of the most awaited television events of the year and garnered 3.76 million views. During the interview, Kaitlin Olson revealed that she loved the first part:
“It was so much fun, and their episode was so funny. I loved every second of it. I got to wear a Benjamin Franklin get-up.”
Olson further opened up about how the special event was conceived, revealing that she and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney used to meet Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson at social events. The two creators discussed the possibility of a crossover as both shows are set in Philadelphia, and the idea was pitched to Disney CEO Bob Iger:
“Rob and Quinta and I would always meet each other at events like this and just talk about how we were fans of each other. And Rob and Quinta were like, ‘We should do a crossover episode,’ and they kept coming back to that and it was last year at this event that they were like, ‘No, let’s do it and we have some ideas.’ Then Rob pitched an idea. It was so fun. What a dream come true.”
In the first part, Charlie, Dennis, Mac, Dee, and Frank arrived at the Abbott Elementary school and started helping out the faculty in odd ways. The teachers eventually realized that they were the Gang from Paddy’s Pub. doing court-ordered community service.
As the two worlds collided, it led to some hilarious situations and chaos, which are going to continue in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 1, which will be aired on FXX on July 9, 2025.
