You recently came to an exhilarating end on Netflix and put a fitting conclusion to the five seasons' worth of storylines. The finale of You season five saw Joe Goldberg's fate finally catch up with him following the prolonged manipulation, murder, and cover-ups that he indulged in to save his own skin.
Joe Goldberg was finally brought down by the efforts of a new character introduced in the final season of the Netflix show called Bronte. As Joe is sentenced to prison as the deliverance of justice, his previous narrative still remains relevant in terms of the interesting twists and turns it comprises. Here, we take a look at all the major twists that were presented throughout the show.
What happened on You seasons 1 - 5 on Netflix?
The debut season of Netflix introduced Joe Goldberg as a bookstore manager in New York who gradually became obsessively fixated with one of his customers, Guinevere Beck. Joe eventually murdered Beck and made the whole affair look like a suicide. The second season of You found Joe relocating to Los Angeles and assuming a new identity as Will. Despite a changed backdrop, Joe soon relapses into his old behavior, and this time ends up stalking his neighbor, Love Quinn. Joe even murders Love's former boyfriend, Ethan, so that he can't cause any trouble. Towards the end of the season, Joe and Love decide to start living together.
The third season begins with Joe and Love living together, but Joe can't help being struck by Love's sister Natalia, with whom he soon develops a relationship. Once again, Joe kills Natalie's boyfriend, Malcolm. Moving on to the fourth season, Joe and Love are seen to be on with their baby as Joe once again becomes obsessively attracted to the librarian Marienne, killing her abusive ex-husband, Ryan. Joe is arrested towards the season finale but escapes with Marienne's help.
The fifth season of the show takes Joe back to New York, and this time, he is duped by Bronte, who initially walks into his life and then ends up shooting him and turning him over to the police.
Penn Badgley reflects on his character Joe Goldberg from You
Speaking in an interview with Tudum, Badgley reflected on his character on the Netflix show and remarked about what he learned from Joe:
"Joe has helped me understand what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father at a deeper level, I’ve had to understand, not only just the obviously atrocious ways that he represents men, or husbands, or fathers. But also the small sins that we’re all guilty of.”
He added:
"It was really important to me that Joe finally be seen as a sexual predator. I don’t say that lightly. We all know that’s what he is. But we tend to artfully dance around it or forget it because he can be so charming. So the show finally had to really deconstruct that part of his personality.”
All the seasons of You are available on Netflix.
