To be more precise, she is trapped in Vecna's memories. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sadie Sink, who plays Max, opened up about Max's return, and future in the final season.Sadie Sink on Max's future in Stranger Things Season 5In Stranger Things Season 5, Max Mayfield is seen to be in the hospital, still in coma, and Lucas, who undoubtedly still loves her very much, is seen to be sitting by her every time he can. He also plays Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill on loop to make sure Max can hear it in case something bad happens, and she needs to resist Vecna in the Upside Down again. Max is seen to be in a coma for the first two episodes of Season 5, but at the end of episode 3, she is revealed to be trapped in Henry's memories. She then reveals to Holly that whom she thinks is her friend Henry is actually Vecna, and that Max has been trapped in Henry's memories ever since she fell into a coma. Max kept running from memory to memory, but she ended up at the beginning, until she arrived at the cave, where Henry was terrified to enter. Thus, the cave became her safe place and she has been living and planning there. Max and Holly are now allies, who have to figure out a way out of this maze of memories.Sadie Sink, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, was asked if the time gap between Stranger Things Seasons 4 and 5 were less stressful for her since she knew she was coming back, as opposed to fans, who didn't know if Max would live. Sadie responded by saying,"Yes, it was less stressful. I knew she would be coming back when we were finishing season four. I was kind of warned that it would look like I was dying, “but don’t worry, you’re not.”Speaking about how she died for a moment at the end of Season 4, then came back to life, and slipped into a coma, Sink said,"But they said, “Don’t worry, you’re safe. You will serve a purpose in this plot.” But that was kind of it, so I had no idea what that meant."
