Although the story revolves around suspense and investigation, it is not omnipresent Lin who truly shatters Coop's world. The turn of events is not triggered by a gun; rather, it is the memory restored by a Voyager trip to Princeton that does so.

Jon Hamm and Amanda Peet are incredibly engaging. They communicate their relationship in a manner that's steeped in history, remorse, and warmth. The moment they sleep together is not focused on the sex but on what has brought them to this point; it's a brief yet powerful indication that maybe, just maybe, they can find happiness again.

Yet, it's just a trick of the mind.

Christian's brutal message reminds us of what show we're watching

Coop seems to be on the brink of a kind of peaceful state just before the show presents its most terrible moment. At Barney's house, in the pouring rain, Coop is attacked by two of Christian's goons—these two were sent by Christian as revenge for their bloody breakup. The climax of the story occurs when Barney goes to Coop's rescue, only to be struck by a car, resulting in his coma or death.

This instance is a cruel slap in the face of the truth. Coop's input on that day—his kids' happiness, Mel's smiling, the music in Hunter's eyes—was tainted by the shambles he believed he could escape. And at this point, his friend might be the one to suffer for it.
