Remember the quirky yet compassionate Dr. John Micahel 'J.D.' Dorian, from ABC's popular medical sitcom Scrubs? Ahead of its official release date announcement of the reboot/revival series of Scrubs, Deadline reported.
Zach Braff, who played the role of J.D. in Scrubs, is all set to return for the medical sitcom's reboot series. As per the outlet, getting the actor-turned-director onboard wasn't easy — he put forward a few clauses, including shifting the filming location from Vancouver to LA.
The original creator of Scrubs, Bill Larwnce, previously teased Braff's involvement in a 2024 Deadline interview. He said:
"I wanted Zach to be in this because he’s been directing mostly lately, and I think people forget he’s a really, really good actor. And for a while, it just tickled me for him to be playing a doctor again. I’m like, what is J.D.’s life — that’s straight from the book — what if J.D.’s life had taken a bad turn."
Apart from Scrubs, Zach Braff also appeared in several different projects, including The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy, The Last Kiss, All New People, Wish I Was Here, Moonshot, and Percy, to name a few. The now 50-year-old actor began his directorial journey in 2004, when he directed the romantic dramedy film Garden State. Additionally, he also directed several other popular projects, including Self Promotion, Alex, Inc., Ted Lasso, Solos, A Good Person, and The Mattachine Family.
Scrubs, the popular medical sitcom starring Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke, first premiered in October 2001 on NBC. The plot delves deep into the professional and personal lives of the medical interns of the fictional Sacred Heart hospital. After seven seasons, the show was picked up by ABC, which aired the remaining two seasons. The sitcom spanned almost nine years and finally wrapped up on May 14, 2010. Throughout the tenure, the series has won several awards, including Emmys.
Almost fifteen years after the finale, Scrubs remains hugely popular among its fans. It boasts an impressive 8.4/10 rating on IMDb and an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With nostalgia running high and fans still quoting their favourite scenes, it's no surprise that a reboot is on the way.
Here's what we know about the Scrubs reboot
In December 2024, when the OG creator Bill Lawrence teased about the reboot series, the fans of the medical sitcom were left elated. However, developing the Scrubs reboot wasn't an easy ride, and was quite chaotic. Lawrence, who was already in a sole agreement with Warner Bros. TV, found it quite difficult and time-consuming to finally carve out the reboot of Scrubs for Disney's 20th Century Television. Additionally, for the reboot series, Lawrence will not serve as a showrunner or writer, as he is already stacked up with projects, including Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, etc.
Currently, the casting process seems to be in development. With Zach Braff returning for the reboot, it is likely possible that there may be a few familiar faces making a comeback. Especially fan favourites like Judy Reyes, Neil Flynn, John C. McGinley, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison.
