On Beyond the Gates, Vernon and Anita simply had to come to terms with the fact that Dani and Andre are grown and can make their own decisions, despite their feelings on it.
Beyond the Gates, parents never outgrow protecting their children

Dani (Karla Mosley) and Andre (Sean Freeman) were about to enjoy brunch at the Fairmont Country Club, i say almost as it didn’t take Dani long to spot Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) sitting at her table with her headphones on and jamming out to some Tina Turner. But this wasn’t to be the only disruption of the morning. Andre managed to prevent Dani from heading over to Leslies table and casuiing a scene, of which Dani is famous for, just as Dani’s phone rang. Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis) had decided for themselves that they were going to have the couple over to their house for brunch, call it a family ambush.

The Dupree elders wanted to talk to their daughter and her new husband and find out why they were still married and get Dani to end it. I’m sure they thought they had a good chance of success given how they usually take control of the family and tell people what they should think and feel on any given subject. This wasn’t to be one of those times.
Andre and Dani stand united

Dani told Andre that her mother had summoned them and off they went, They were met by a very staunch looking Anita and Vernon and quickly it weas decided that the old “divide and conquer” was the way to go, with Vernon suggesting to Andre that they leave the ladies to have a mother daughter cautch up. Vernon took Andre out to the foyer and while Andre was very respectful and referred to Vernon as “Sir” he wasn’t about to be talked down to or dissuaded from having Dani as his wife. Andre explained what they had together and they loved each other and while it was unique and not for everyone, it was uniquely theirs. Vernon agreed that he couldnt change it and so he had to support it. In the lounge, Anita wasn’t as gentle and asked Dani what she was doing with her life other than throwing pieces into the air and accepting where they landed. Dani said she was going full circle and starting anew, with Andre, moving past Bill and the trauma there and wasn’t that what Anita wanted for her daughter?

Yes, that was what Anita wanted, but challenged Dani with,” Do you love Andre,” she then pressed Dani to answer the question to which dani replied with, “I love him enough” after explaining exactly what that meant, Anita resigned herself to picking a different battle and the men soon joined them. Anita poured some sparkling cider, and I’m sure it was actually because they didnt want to waste champagne on this occasion, toasted the happy couple, with Vernon saying, “long may it last”.
It was nice to see that the Dupree elders can’t sway everyone to their point of view all the time and that Dani and Andre can be their own people and live their own life. For now at least, Dani and Andre will remain married, but it’s hard to look past the shadow of Hayley (Marquita Goings) and her designs on ending Bill’s (Timon Kyle Durett) life and how that may effect Dani.
