On Beyond the Gates, there was quite the scene between Ashley and Derek at the hospital, but can we just get to the heart of the matter and say it? Derek is just a consolation prize.

The scene at the nurses' station, wow, and I’m not talking about the one with Ted (Keith D. Robinson), Carlton (Robert Christopher Riley), and Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix). The nurses' station is the go-to place for a public argument, that's for sure. And there to witness it all was Shanice (Ernestine Johnson) in all her eavesdropping glory. Derek's want of a conversation about setting up a date for his wedding to Ashley turned into a nightmare, and at the heart of it all is an inconvenient truth.

Ashley (Jen Jacob) still wants Andre (Sean Freeman); her heart is there, as is her body and soul. Derek (Ben Gavin) was an afterthought and a consolation prize, and she as good as said that if Derek hadn’t gotten injured, she and Andre would still be together. This is why things keep blowing up when they discuss the wedding and why Ashley is hesitant to set a date; she is hanging in there in hopes that something will come up and that Andre will see her and be available. If Ashley were just honest with herself and Derek, we could finally move on from this train wreck.

As soon as Derek was wheeled into the hospital after spilling off his bike and giving his spine the old snap, crackle, and pop, Andre and Ashley were done. Ashley's heart shifted allegiances quicker than the leftovers get eaten here at home. Would Derek be all alone if she weren’t there to nurse him? Yes, was that a good enough reason to give the guy false hope? No. But here we are, Andre is married to Dani in a drunken ceremony in Vegas, and neither of those two is supremely happy about it. Dani loves him…enough, and Andre says,” It works.”

Why? Because Ashley played Yes I Do, Now No I don't with Andre, and now that Andre has moved on and appears to her to be happily so, she didn't want to be alone, so in comes placeholder Derek. Can we please address this before this blows up worse? Hang on, soap fans, intuition says this isn’t far from a colossal scene.

You can watch Beyond the Gates weekdays on CBS or stream live or on-demand on Paramount Plus.
